It is a measure of exercise capacity, or metabolic equivalent. For instance 2 mets is the equivalent amount of work to brushing your teeth, 4 mets to performing normal house care duties. Technically speaking one Met is 1 kcal/ kg/ hour. So if you weigh say 70 kgms, then the amount of energy expended in one hour would be 700 kcal/hour, or about 150 Joules/ second or watts. Remenber this is peak performance not a sustainable effort levels. Another way of seeing this is one MET is 3.5 mm O2 per kg of body weight, so a peak exercise of 10 METs equals a VO2 of 35, which is in the normal range for an athletic young person, and better than that for the elderly.
