aneurysm

My dad is 77 years old and just been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.  It is 6.8 cm in diameter and 10.6 cm in length.  He has coronary disease but I am not sure to what degree.  What are is chances for surgery or is he even a candidate for surgery?  How long can you have an aneurysm of this size and not have it rupture?  I am very concerned about his well being, but am not sure what questions to ask the Dr. or what to expect.  Thank you.

That anuerysm is of the size the requires surgery. There is a risk of rupture that exceeds the risk of surgery, thought the exact risk is hard to predict. He needs a cardiac evaluation to first make sure that he can undergo major surgery safely. Another option to consider might be placement of a stent-graft; if he is a candidate for this procedure, he would not need major surgery. Not every center is doing stent-grafts, but major centers such as ours are.
