Breastfeeding and hepatitis B
Hello!

My name is Alexandra,I am 34 years old and I am from Romania.I hope you can help me with a medical opinion in the next issue:

I am infected with the hepatitis B virus and I am expecting my second baby who will come in 2 weeks.
My blood tests made in the 7th month of pregnancy showed the following:
ADN-HBV  3110 UI/ml(3.49 log)
AgHBe negative
ALT/TGP  32UI/ml
AST/TGO  22 UI/ml

My baby will receive Immunoglobulin and anti hepatitis B vaccine at birth.
Is it safe to breastfeed my child if I use breast shields and avoid nipple cracking?

I mention that I didn't breastfeed my first child 3 years ago.My ADN HVB was about 60000 UI then, and the doctors didn't allowed me to breastfeed.

I hope you can help me with an advise.
Thank you!

The guidelines recommend breastfeeding IF your baby receive HBIG and the HBV vaccination within 12 hrs of birth.

Congratulations and all the best to you and your soon-to-arrive baby.
