Need help reading my HSV 1/2 IGG, Herpeselect test!

by La_Vita_e_Bella, May 16, 2009 03:13PM
I had tests done over a year ago when it seemed like I was having my first outbreak. It was during my menstrual cycle so I thought maybe it could have been just some weird infection, but I had the HSV 1/2 IGG, Herpeselect test done along with a swab test just to be safe. To this day I'm still not sure how to interpret the results because I got a phone call from the nurse after the testing saying everything was ok, but when I went back to the doctors a few months ago I had them make me a copy of my results just because I was curious.  The first document I received stated:

HSV 1/2 IGG, Herpeselect         In Range       Out of Range       Reference Range
  type specific AB
Herpes type 1                            0.08                                          EIA value
Herpes type 2                            0.08                                          EIA value

EIA value    1.10    Positive- HSV-1 or HSV-2 IGG antibody detected

Therefore, according to the IGG test I assumed that I had neither HSV-1 nor HSV-2. But when i read the other document with my swab test results it said otherwise:

In Range               Out of Range                 Reference Range

HSV-1 DNA                                             Detected                      Not Detected
HSV-2 DNA             Not Detected                                                Not Detected

Does this mean I have HSV-1, which is commonly known as oral herpes or cold sores, on my genitals? I know almost everyone is born with HSV-1 regardless if you get cold sores or not. I tried talking to the nurse after receiving my test results telling them that I was first told that nothing was wrong but the paper work says otherwise. The nurse said she couldn't help me and said I had to talk to the doctor that initially did the testing. The problem is my doctor no longer works there so I left without being helped and even more confused then before. If someone can help me understand my results better I would really appreciate it!!

It appears that your lesion culture was pcr hsv1+.  This would mean that you have hsv1 genitally.
