Live Donors

I just found out that my little sister needs a liver transplant. Based on her labs, her MELD score is not very high, but since she has many other health issues, it bumps her score up. What I was wondering, is what kinds of things do you think we should consider when deciding weather to go with a live donor, or a deceased donor? Because I will be going to get my blood type to see if mine is compatible with hers. But I just would like to know what my parents should consider when choosing live donor or not. thank you.

As a recipient of a living donor liver transplant, I would have much rather have received a cadavaric liver, but there are not enough to go around and sometimes the transplant team will suggest live donation if time is of the essence. Receiving a living donation requires some one you know to undergo a major operation that for them is unnecessary. There is a lengthy recovery time of 6 to 8 weeks before they can go back to heavy work.
There are statistics that show how much risk the donor is at, but as a recipient you worry that something could go wrong. I my case it worked wonderfully well and both I and my donor are totally fine. I will never be able to totally repay him for such a loving gift.
For a guide to the  Living Donor process see:
http://www.transplant.bc.ca/pre_livingliver.htm
It is a good overview of the entire process and explains some benefits for the recipient, really time and availability,  and risks to the donor. It describes the entire process (select "Information guide for potential live liver donors" )
Also read "FAQ" on same site.
Best wishes which ever way you finally go.
