update- wife's broken leg

Today's operation was canceled because of my wife's resperatory problems. She was borderline COPD, but now the scales tipped and the resparologists are saying she has COPD. They found no infection in her chest, but she's coughing a lot. She was unable to do a lung function test due to coughing.

They're treating her with a nebulizer and who knows what else. They are going to do a CT scan sometime today to check for any blood clots.

The swelling in her leg is at an acceptable level for the operation, which will involve 2 steel plates to screw her bone back together, but the lung and breathing issues are what's causing the hold up.

She will maybe have the operation on Thursday. That's the soonest. She doesn't want a spinal block because of compression fractures  she has in her lower back, so they have to be able to put her under.

Since last Thursday she has only eaten 3 or 4 spoons of rice on Friday, and one small cup of tapioca pudding yesterday, both times she got sick afterwards.

On the up side, they had three nurses working on her this morning and were able to get her bedding changed and give her a good wash up which made her feel a liittle better.

She's getting a lot of attention from all the staff. They're doing their best to help her get through this. And my sister took another couple days off work to help out and to be there after the surgery Thursday...hopefuly.

I'll update when something more happens

Mike

Hi Mike

Dang this is the pits. I hope today is better and you are there now to keep your finger on the pulse w/her care.  And, I hope you find something she'll nibble on.

How are you holding up Mike?  It's so stressful to see a loved one suffering.  Please remember to take care of yourself too.

The respiratory group checked her out this morning and felt her breathing was much improved and approved her for surgery today. We were feeling pretty positive.

Then in mid afternoon the word came up from the OR that they would not be able to operate on her today, but maybe on Saterday.

I think I'm more upset about another dealy than my wife is, and my muttering and ranting was not helping or making it any easier for my wife, so I took a deep breath and  shook it off.

About 10 minutes after my sister and I left the hospital so my wife could get some rest a man and a woman came into her room and said they were going to do a nerve block to deaden the broken leg so she wouldn't need the pain killers anymore.

My wife said "no, I don't even know who you are, I've never seen you before. I want to discuss it with my husband". They left the room and the guy came back a few minutes later and said he hoped she didn't feel as though they were presuring her. She told them she did feel presured and wasn't pleased about it.

I'm hoping to get ahold of our GP tomorow for advice. It's tough when the Doc we know and trust is so far away. She's just a stranger in a big hospital, waiting for someone to finaly fix her damned broken leg.

She's been in the hospital for a full week now! She shares a room with a very quiet elderly lady and two old guys who are suffering with some kind of dementia. The poor old fellas are yelling and carrying on all night long so my wife is only getting fitful sleep at best.

She's still barely eaten anything all week. I brought her in a small Mickey D's cheeseburger and fries, and some kind of ice fruit drink this eve. She had the drink right away and enjoyed it. She phoned my sister's place just awhile ago to say she was watching 'swamp people' on  the tiny TV, and she had eaten the burger and a few fries. Not exactly health food, but at least she has something in her belly.

My third sister is going to pick me up tomorow AM and bring me to the hospital. We'll pick the wife up a couple of breakfast wraps and a big cup of coffee and see if it sparks any interest.

Our daughter's from the southern interior are going to meet and carpool down tomorow after work. They'll get here too late to visit Fri PM, but will be here for the Saturday operation....if there ever is an operation.

Thanks for caring everyone. I hope all is well as can be for you all.

Just wondering how you and your wife are doing. Any scheduled time frame for fixing that broken leg?

Will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers!

Hey Mike,

I cannot believe I'm just seeing this now. Did she have the surgery? If so, I pray it went well and she's on the mend soon. Thinking of you both.

Hi Mike!
I am so sorry to see that you and your wife are going through this as you did have enough to deal with prior to her accident.  I hope that she is able to get her surgery soon.  I have COPD and they are very careful that I am physically capable of breathing on my own before surgery and I do appreciate it!

Sounds as though she really did a number on that leg though!  I do know that the Respiratory Therapists are wonderful and they have really helped me deal with the issues that are dealt us.  They will be an important part of her getting her COPD under control and helping her after her surgery with any breathing issues.

Anyway, please wish her all the best for me and don't forget your needs during this stressful time Mike.  As you know, if you are not well when she gets out of hospital you won't be able to help her.  Take care Mike and keep us informed of what is happening will you?  I am sending healthy thoughts your way!

Lots of Hugs,
Rena

We found out last night the CT showed no blood clots, which is a great relief!

They moved her to the room closest to the nurses station so every nurse who walks by see her.

Hopefuly she'll be good to go for the operation tomorow.

Mike

Oh, and thanks everyone, she knows you're pulling for her.

Mike, I'm hoping this isn't a pulmonary embolism.  Those are fairly common after an arm or leg break.  A little blood clot can travel up into the lungs, and really wreak havoc!

Sending good thoughts to you and your wife...

Hi Mike,

Sounds pretty awful for your poor wife but glad she's getting a lot of tender loving care from the nurses and of course dearly beloved.

Thinking of you both.
