CAD, Horner's Syndrome with dysphagia and hypertension

Dear Sir/Madam,
A few weeks ago, I went to my GP on a Thursday. My bloodpressure was 200/120 and I was given medication (Selokeen, a beta-blocker).

On Sunday, I had a typical Carotid Artery Dissection headache (ipsilateral) which started in the lower neck and crawled up to my face. On Monday morning I noticed left-sided Horner's Syndrome, including a bruit. I cannot tell you if I have anhydrosis, but the skin under my hair (left side) is painful when I brush it.

One week later, I started having difficulty swallowing (residues remain in the back of my mouth) and talking seemed more difficult and nasal (I can pronounce everything).

The hypertension remained high (180/110) and Coversyl (an Ace-slower)was added.

A CT-scan, Thorax, Duplex, MEP, and a MRI/MRA was made of the upper and lower brain and neck. The Duplex and MRI/MRA showed a Carotid Artery Dissection, no medication as yet.

Strangely enough - the MEP showed a significant difference (>10%)of my left leg (I also fell to the left side when I was standing feet together with my eyes closed - but both my feet can feel tickling). My neurologist suggests an MRI of the spinal chord and a lumbar puncture, and feels it may be a co

There are two syndromes which could explain your symptoms, called Collet-Sicard and Villaret's syndrome. These are names for syndromes which occur when certain nerves of the face and neck are injured. Carotid dissection could cause these syndromes. A carotid dissection could be due to high blood pressure, or could theoretically cause high blood pressure in the syndromes previously mentioned. You should discuss this with your doctor. Good luck.
