Catemenial Epilepsy ?

Catemenial Epilepsy ?

Three months ago, my 16 yr. old sister "passed out". No one witnessed the
episode. We just found her on the floor. One month later, the same thing
happened. Both episodes occurred just after she woke up and on the 5th day
after her period. She was incoherent and lethargic for about 20 minutes
after each episode. She later had a sleep deprivation EEG which the doctor
said "showed signs of seizure activity". The doctor diagnosed epilepsy and
recommended Depacote(sp?). She is athletic and fit with no history of any
health problems. Is it possible that the seizures were related to hormone
imbalances ? Might she "outgrow" them ? Will these seizures continue for
the rest of her life ? Lifelong medication seems so drastic - any info.
  would be appreciated.

Dear Kristine:
The occurrence of seizures could be triggered by hormonal changes, but in most cases these changes are not the cause but an exacerbating factor.
Based on the limited information I have, I can not say if your sister may outgrow her seizures, because there are many types of seizures and epilepsies.
In order to answer these questions a full review of the clinical infromation, EEG results, MRI results needs to be done.
I would suggest that you consult with an Epileptologist for this purpose. You may call the CLeveland Clinic Section of Epilepsy to make an appointment for your sister at 1 800 CCF CARE or 216 444 5559
In the mean time, I strongly suggest that your sister continues her Depakote and to follow all the seizure precautions outlined by her doctor.
Good luck
