Leg Numbness/Soreness

: Initially I had lower back pain with numbness in my left buttock and left
: hamstring. Now, if I sit for any length of time, or when I first get out of
: bed in the morning, I can barely walk. It's almost like no blood is getting
: to my lower extremities, because after awhile, I can move with greater
: ease. However, there is still discomfort when walking. I still have lower
: back pain and numbness in my left buttock and left hamstring area, but
: as noted, I now have the other symptoms.

Dear Preston:
One of the commonest causes of pain and numbness like yours is a pinching of one of the lumbosacral nerve roots (L5 or S1) in the back, either from disc protrusion, or from degenerative spine disease. Other cause of similar pain include arthritis of the hip, muscle pain, and pinching of nerves outside the spine. A neurologist should be able to diagnose the problem appropriately, often with the help of confirmatory tests such as MRI of the spine and/or EMG.
Good luck!
