Leg pain 2yrs post spinal fusion surgery

I had spinal fusion surgery-L4/L5- in February 2007 and am just now experiencing pain down the back of my right leg where the hamstring is.   It feels like a rubber band that has been stretched to its limit, and is starting to interfere with daily activities.  The surgery went perfectly, recovery was excellent, and I have had no problems until now.  Any input would be wonderful as I am a very physically active person.  Thank you!

Without the ability to examine you and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of your symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Your symptoms may be musculoskeletal related to muscle strain or ligament/tendon problems. However, given your history of spinal fusion, one concern would be that there is scarring around the surgical site, trapping the nerve that provides innervation to the leg, what is known as radiculopathy or sometimes "pinched nerve". Radiculopathy can also be caused by herniated discs or arthritis of the spine. I recommend you be evaluated by your local physician (PCP, family doctor) and if he/she suspects that this may be the case, imaging of your spine with MRI, or referral to a spine specialist may be indicated.
