I am a 27-year old female who has had problems with headaches and virtigo for many years. My brother, who is 24 has recently been diagnosed with an Arachnoid Cyst in the lower left Occipital region. He has also complained of the same symptoms for many years. The cyst was discovered after an MRI about 2 months ago. I am now going for an MRI to see if I may have the same problem. Approximately four years ago, I was told I had an "irregular" MRI, but was not told what the problem was, only that it was nothing to worry about and the spot was very small. I am now concerned that I may have the same cyst as my brother. My question is what is the likelihood that this is a genetic occurance and if it is, should I be concerned about this problem? Also, would this be something to be concerned about if I choose to get pregnant? The neurosurgeon chose at this time to leave my brother's cyst alone and check him again in six months by doing another MRI. Is this wise?

The answer to your question should be answered soon with the new MRI scan. Arachnoid cysts are usually thought to be congenital (since birth). The cysts are filled with cerebral spinal fluid but do not communicate with the venticles. They are usually incidental but can be associated with neurologic symptoms. Drainage usually results in the cysts just re-expanding. Surgery is a rare event unless it is felt that some other process underlies the cyst. As far as I know there is not a genetic link and pregnancy itself does not pose a problem. You will have to ask your doctor specifically what your "abnormality" is but my guess is that it is someting else. Good luck
