My cousin(female) began to have seizures about 2 yrs ago.
The seizures began approx. the same time she realized that she had
been sexually abused as a child.  she has had 16 seizures since then and
has had a MRI and CT scan which was negative.  She has been taking tegretol
off and on which seems to help some.  My question is, Can recent uncovering of past events
be causing these seizures?
Tank you so much for your time

Dear April:
Seizures could be generally divided into two broad categories: Epileptic and Non epileptic. The main difference is that the EEG (electroencephalogram) shows abnormalities if recorded during an epileptic seizure, and is normal during a non epileptic seizure.
Stress and recovery of shild abuse memory is generally associated with non epileptic seizures, but the possibility of epileptic seizures can not be ruled based on this fact only.
Therefore, I suggest that your cousin get a Epilepsy specialist consult for second opinion about further management because the non epileptic seizures are treated differently and generally have good prognosis.
If she desires to be seen at the Cleveland Clinic Epilepsy Center, she can call 1 800 CCF CARE.
Good luck
