Spinocerebellar Atrophy

Posted By Becky on September 25, 1998 at 23:34:45:

My 74 year old father was recently diagnosed with syringomyelia after having 3 MRI's.  One of the symptoms he was having was paralysis of the left hand.  He also has Glaucoma and Meniere's Disease, which I understand the Meniere's Disease can be a symptom of Syringomyelia.  Recently the neurosurgeon told my father that he isn't as concerned with the syringomyelia as he is with the spinocerebellar atrophy.  I am in the health profession but I have never heard of spinocerebellar atrophy.  Could you please explain what it is, what happens to the person, and what is the normal course of treatment for this condition?    Thank you for your time in answering my question.
