brainstem scan?

brainstem scan?

Tests were ordered for my daughter which included:MRI of brain(w/o dye),
EEG(not sleep deprived), and a brainstem scan.  Could you please tell me what a brainstem scan is and what kind
of information it gives?  Doesn't an MRI of the brain reveal any brainstem abnormalities?

                                    Thank you

Dear Patricia:
MRI of the brain gives a lot of information on the anatomy and the pathology of the brainstem. In very rare cases, special cuts are ordered for specific regions of the brain (and brainstem) if there is strong clinical suspicion of lesions in these particular areas.
The other test on the brainstem is called Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP). This test is not an imaging scan, it is an electricity test. Could it be BAEP?
I hope I was able to help you.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Good luck
