effects of seizure

  Hello,
  When I was 2 years old I suffered 3 grand mal seizures.  My parents had every test, possible, done and nothing was found to be the cause.  They finally decided that it was either due to birth trauma(I had a diffucult birth and forcepts were used) or reflux of the kidney(a genetic condition, my two sisters have it too).  They put me on an anticonvulsant, the seizures stopped, and I haven't had any since then.  I was on the medication for less than five years because it made me aggressive.  My father is a pharmacist so it is likely that that was done correctly.  
  I am now 22 and very shy.  I recently went to see a therapist and he said that the seizures could have affected my personality, it could have something to do with horomones.  Do you think this is possible?  I am also curious about this in general.

Dear Heather:
It is doubtful that the 3 grand mal seizures changed your personality.  In addition, if the traumatic delivery directly induced your seizures, then the seizure events would have occurred much sooner in life.  It might be that the birth trauma lowered your seizure threshold but again that would be difficult to prove.  Since you were only on medication for 5 years, until approximately 7 years of age, I would also doubt that the medication had an effect on your hormonal status.  An additional variable would be which seizure medication you were on, but most of the medications that were in use at the time of your seizures would not cause long lasting hormonal changes.  My opinion would be that neither the seizures nor the seizure medications are responsible for your shyness.  I am glad that you are currently seizure-free.
