epidural for nerve block procedure

Dear sirs,  I recently posted to you about having surgery on my right leg, following a lifting accident at work.  I am now awaiting my 7 th surgery, which is to remove the sural nerve, but the surgeons fear my peroneal nerve is affected too.  they are planning on admitting me to the hospital on the 24th of this month for a five day epidural.  this will then be followed by surgery if deemed neccessary.  could you please explain to me the purpose of such a long procedure, and will i be able to walk, or be bedridden?  I have never heard of this being done for severe neuropathy, and am worried about how painful the procedure will be.  Thank you in advance, any info will be greatly appreciated.  You provide a wonderful sevice, and I have rested easier since I found your site.   Christine
