Dear MC in NY:
Go see a neurologist! Your symptoms may be from something benign such as carpal tunnel syndrome (pinched nerve at the wrist), from a polyneuropathy (which can result from a variety of causes such as diabetes, medications, toxins, metabolic and deficiency disease, malignancy, and others), from demyelinating disease, or may be nothing. You are young and otherwise healthy, and it is really important to make a diagnosis. After examining you a neurologist may recommend a test called the EMG, which is unpleasant, but may be quite useful for diagnosing your problem. If you are in New York city, I suggest that you see a neurologist at any of the very good academic departments there, such as at Columbia-Presbyterian or at New York Hospital (Cornell). If you are thinking of visiting Cleveland in the near future, you are welcome to see a neurologist in our department here (appointments-(216)444-5559/(800)223-2273).
