Tongue swelling and pain

by Janet M., May 22, 2008 12:14PM
I recently had a root canal done on a lower back tooth.  Later that evening when the numbness wore off, my tongue felt swollen and I could not swallow.  By the next day I had white ridges on the side of my tongue and my tongue was very swollen.  The pain on my tongue and back of throat was so bad I could not eat anything.  I called the dentist and he said to rinse with salt water and I should be fine.  Well it took over 5 days before I had any relief.  On my second visit I had the post put in.  I asked the dentist why did that happen to my mouth and he simply said sometimes it does.  Well again I woke up the next morning and this time even worse.  My tongue was so swollen and sore and the back of my throat hurt very badly.  Again I called the dentist and told his assistant that the same thing happened again.  She told me the dentist said to tell me that he has to protect my tongue during this procedure and that I probably got a little irritation.  Again said to rinse with salt water. It is now going on 4 days that I cannot eat and barely drink.  My tongue has white ridges again all along the side he worked on and the pain is still there.  Should I see an oral surgeon?  Also what is this dentist doing to my tongue and back of throat to cause such pain.  I have had other root canals done many years ago with other dentist and never have I experienced such a thing.  What can I do to ease the pain on my tongue and throat and the pain is really wearing on me. I am supposed to go back to get my crown put in, but I think I am going to go to another dentist as am afraid this will happen again.

What you have described is not common following root canal therapy and you should be evaluated by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Trauma and allergic reaction are the most likely explanations but a clinical exam is crucial for a diagnosis.
