I will need surgery. It is 12cm (6cm) and the MRI couldn't show if it had engulfed the ovaries, so I am hoping it has not. They are hoping to just drain it and keep the one ovary and tube I have intact. I got my fingers crossed.
Hi Jackie, I am sorry that you are having to deal with this. My doctor also said that anything over 5cm must come out because of the chance of twisting. I know how upsetting it can be to lose your ovary, but you have to do what you can to keep yourself healthy. Maybe they will be able to drain it and be done with it. What is your doctor thinking? Please keep us posted on how you are doing.
Hugs,
Kasie
I am 31 with one child, but the thought of having to lose my 2 ovary is unbearable.
I had a 10 cm cyst removed (only the size of an orange LOL). It turned out to be a simple cyst but she still took the ovary and tube. My doctor said there was no question about surgery. Because of the size, if it ruptured or twisted from the sheer size and weight of it, I'd end up with a medical emergency.
Hi there. I just had surgery to remove a grapefruit sized fluid filled cyst plus my right ovary and tube. By the time I had surgery it had been with me almost 3 months and was not getting smaller. I was in a lot of pain and so bloated I looked pregnant. I am now in my 3rd week of recovery. They had to take my ovary and tube because of all the adhesions from previous surgery. I have heard that doctors generally want to take out any cysts that are larger than 5 cm. My doctor had initially thought he might just drain the cyst but the adhesions put an end to that one. I think the doctors need to look at each case on an individual basis. How old are you and are you pre or post menopausal?
