I have a 11 week old grand daughter. Her hands and feet are always cold and now we notice her skin on her hands, arms, feet and legs have a blue tinge to them. Could this be something wrong wither her heart or circulation
Without evaluating her, I can’t necessarily tell if there is something wrong with her heart. However, the most likely thing that you are seeing is something that is commonly noted in infants. The autonomic nervous system, which is the part of the nervous system that automatically controls heart rate, blood pressure, blood vessel muscular tone, etc., is immature, and can sometimes overreact. This can cause the blood vessels to close down a bit more than normal to the extremities. Sometimes, we see that there is also a bluish tinge around the mouth. However, inside the mouth it is nice and pink, and the babies have no symptoms. We see it often when they’re in the bathtub or when they awaken from a nap. This can go on through infancy and, occasionally, early toddlerhood, but essentially resolves without incident. Things that would be of more concern is if she was having symptoms of getting out of breath or getting sweaty, either with feeds or during these episodes. If that was the case, she should be further evaluated.
