Why does my son gag so much

My 6 year old son has a very hyperactive gag reflex. He has had this since he was very young but in the past year it has gotten worse. He gags every time he puts a shirt on he feels the shirts are gagging him (even though they are not tight around his neck) it is real bad on school days as he does not want to go to school but he also says he doesn't want to gag but he can't help it. I have spoke to his doctor about this and he wants to put him on an antacid, I don't think it's acid thats making him gag but I don't know what it could be. He does not have any other sensory issues and is a happy kid. If anyone has ever experienced this before please post!
