Pros/Cons of Coumadin therapy?

My friend, age 50, suffered 3 strokes from April, 2009 - June, 2009.  He has been under Dr's care and has not had any further strokes since June 18th.  He has type 1 diabetes, and high blood pressure--which are now at controlled levels.  His focus is working hard at rehab trying to walk better and deal with his frozen shoulder (the strokes were on the left side of the brain and affected his right side), however, my focus is doing everything possible to ensure he doesn't have anymore strokes!  I don't think either of us could endure another!  A neurologist recently suggested he be put on Coumadin.  He is now on Plavix and aspirin.  I had noticed he tested positive for SSA antibody and the Dr. indicated this is why he needs to be on Coumadin.  I have heard some horror stories about this drug and wonder if anyone else dealing with recurrent ischemic strokes has been on Coumadin and what their experience has beeen.
