Speech Spasticity

by Espelho, Jul 20, 2008 11:36AM
Hello,
My father suffered a stroke back in march, and was in a coma for about a month, he then slowly started coming out of it, where he would open his eyes, feed through the mouth, focus on things and even compose sentences. a month ago though he stopped feeding through the mouth and we had to put the levine back in. However, following this he has developed spasticity in various forms, his right arm and shoulder is seized up, his left leg constantly kicks and the most disconcerting is that he has stopped speaking and has developed a spastic cry/scream (he screams about every 10sec or so). Doctors are uncertain about if this is caused by another small stroke, but what I want to know is if anyone has experienced anything like this in their cases, and if the patients came out ok. Any treatments that were used would also be great just so I can compare with what is being done so far.

Thanks!

Hi,
I am sorry to hear about your father. The description you provided suggested that your father may have experiences a second stroke (and that is expected ). Anyway, the loss of the ability of speech should be temporarily and should not be something to really worry about your father. Just give him some time and his speech should recovers. I cannot tell what would be the outcomes from rehabilitation (because there is no enough information in your description), but most of my patient will recover their speech capabilities with few months. The best treatment for cases like stroke is gonna be you/ family. The physical therapist should know that and educate you to be of the effective parts in the rehabilitation team.
