Another experience with an outdated Endo, (stuck in his ways)

Well, instead of just ignoring this incompetent Endo I just saw, I thought I'd politely challenge his outdated thyroid treatment beliefs by asking questions. We 'politely' disagreed with each other, and that was that. There was no changing this Drs thinking process, and he could not look me in the eye when answering me either.

His beliefs:
1)Treat by TSH
2)Frees are not accurate
3)Symptoms are second to lab #'s

What he does:
1)TSH is most important test (and uses outdated range)
2) Divides T-Uptake into Total T4 and Total T3 to get T4 index and T3 index
3) Says anyone that has symptoms while in range of his outdated tests needs psychological help

Doing my part I:
1)Challenged his outdated TSH range (he said that is what his clinic uses, (its HIS clinic))
2)Mentioned that TSH is not a 'body consumable' thyroid hormone like free's (he did not care)
3)Mentioned many articles that state Free T3 / T3 testing (no protein bound hormone) is more accurate than the method he chooses to use.
4)Mentioned that I have personal proof that high range FT3 is what my body likes. (he did not care about FT3).
5)I asked isn't it the best interest for any Dr to rid a patient of symptoms? He would not answer.
6)I asked if he has other patients who still have symptoms when med is controlled by TSH? His answer - "Yes".
7)I then suggested that maybe he did not do all he could for these people. His answer - if they still have symptoms they need psycho meds.
8)The Grand Finale - Why do you insist in using this treatment / testing that leaves people sick? "Because its our clinic's policy to use these tests and ranges as the guide. This is what we do and how we do it"
9)At this point he felt interrogated and wanted me to leave (but suggested I follow up in 5 months).

Another clueless and stubborn endo, whom I will mark off my list. Judging from his age, retirement is near (good!).I will also do my part to make sure he is NOT on the top doc list.

I encourage others to challenge any clueless Drs. as to why they are so stubborn to use inadequate treatments and testing.

This nonsense needs to stop. We are people, not #'s.

LM

I would love to know who NOT to see. I'm struggling up here near Denton and would easily drive in to Dallas for the right person.
Will you message me the name at least of who not to go to and anyone you heard who may be good.

Thank you,
Toni

My only experience with an Endo was very brief.  He looked at my TSH result, which was .05 and said that I needed to reduce my Synthroid right away, that I was hyperthyroid.  I told him that I was not, that I actually had lingering hypo symptoms.  I wanted to talk about testing for FT3, and FT4, along with TSH.  He didn't feel that was necessary, that TSH told all about the thyroid status, and that his target for TSH was 1.0 - 1.5.  Needless to say, that was my only trip there.

I did think that it was revealing that in the middle of the day, in his busy waiting room filled with his regular patients, that about half of them had dozed off while waiting.  Not too hard to figure out why.  LOL

"a directory of "yes" and "no" of who to see"
- that sounds like a good combo. We need that for more states.

"found an internal med dr. Who has hashimotos"
- even better!

A Dr's who have Thyroid disease list would be the best!

Lm,

I belong to a thyroid group on yahoo here in Texas that has a directory of "yes" and "no" of who to see.  There are a lot of "no" on there.  I looked at it today and found an internal med dr. Who has hashimotos and it says she is good with newly diagnosed!

Great job LM. I am a huge supporter of how you micro-managed that appointment. I have done that to in my past after I started to feel good.

Too bad you have to still pay for that terrible service! I was just saying to someone that the insurance companies should have a 10 day eval of patient experience after doctor visits...

If there is no improvement............ then NO pay! - I bet doctors like this would decided to look at better options if the started working for free most of the time.... :)

Again - Good Job... I was thinking about starting a completely opposite doctor list and call it Thyroid Doctor Blunders Directory -vs- Top Thyroid Doctor Directory. The "legal" issues on doing something like that is detailed but it is in the back of my mind to check into.

Keep his creditials and I'll call on you for it - if I fly that site one day.

BTW - you sound MUCH stronger... I sure hope you are doing as well as I seem to read here.

awesome that you did that! i just "fired" the original endo i went to for my hyperthyroidism. he suggest RAI right off the bat based off of TSH, T4, and T3. i also explained i was having symptoms of TED and i asked if RAI would improve my eye problems and he said YES........ he didnt suggest testing for Graves or explain that RAI can make TED worse! id be in a crap load of trouble if i hadnt gone to another practice and gotten a 2nd opinion. the new endo tested me for Graves, which i tested positive for, tested my FT3 & FT4, and also took the time to explain everything in detail and referred me to an opthomologist who specializes in thyroid eye disease.

i learned at a very young age that doctors arent gods and they CAN BE WRONG. when it comes to your health you should always get a 2nd opinion.

LM,

I had a visit similiar to yours last week.  The endo said he was "dumfounded" that I was having such a bad reaction after taking my thyroid medicine in the morning.  Said that it was the first time in his 27 years of practice that someone would have such a reaction.  Said my TSH was not far out of range and that my symptoms were not in line with thyroid disease.  Told me I needed a psych evaluation and cringed when i told him I already had one and they told me it was clearly "medical".

This is a guy that is listed on every "top doc" list in Dallas for endos.  He also got very offended when I asked him (with no bad intention) if he had a thyroid disease.  It was almost as thought he thought i was saying "you dont have a thyroid disease so you obviously do not know what you are doing".

He was fired.
