I have a 3.5 cm nodule on my left thyroid lobe. I had a FNA done 1 week ago and I just got the results, 99% positve that it is benign! I am so relieved, but should I be? Have any of you had Thyroid cancer and had those results from your FNA? My surgeon would still like to take it out because of the size and to get a 100% dx.
You could always ask that the slides be sent out to Mayo or another facility for a second opinion from another pathologist. I think with 99% chance that it's benign, I'd lean on the side of being a bit more conservative.
Personally, I am not a huge fan of FNAs. Two of my sisters had them, both were benign, both had cancer.
The only way to know for certain, unfortunately, is to have it removed and sent to pathology. I wish there was an easier way. It does sound like there is a pretty good to have it removed though, benign or not, just because of the size.
papillary carcinoma '03
recurrence and RAI '06 and probably '08
three sisters with papillary carcinoma
My nodule is said to be around 2.7 cm. I decided before I even had my fna that no matter what the results I was going to have it removed. I didn't want to have to worry about it for the rest of my life.
