How to get a decent night's sleep?

3 and a half weeks since my RAI treatment, and now I'm having sleeping issues.  I'm not sure if it has to do with the thyroid dying off or not, but it's getting frustrating.  I usually pass out around 10-11pm.  For the past week I've been waking up between 1:00-2:30am, and once I do I can't go back to sleep for at least half an hour.  Anyone have any suggestions on how to sleep through the night?  It wouldn't bother me so much except when I wake up in the morning, I feel like I haven't gotten any sleep at all.

I had RAI therapy in 3/2008 and still can't sleep.  It took over six months for me to become hypo and then it would on occasion flip flop so at times I was overdosing on the medication (Levoxyl) because I would become hyper again.  It can be a rough ride but I've been told it eventually evens out, but now after two years I'm still waiting.

I don't have thyroid diagnosis... yet.  But I've had sleeping trouble.  I've tried Ambien and Lunesta.  Ambien left me too groggy the next day and a big dry mouth.  I liked Lunesta, though it is a lighter med.

I find it helps to have a TV on (volume off) in the bedroom to get to sleep.  Also keeping the room cool and wearing thin pajamas.

They also have herbal formulas for sleeping, such as Valerian.  And I've heard amino acids help a lot too, such as Tyrosine I think it was.  Searching the reviews of herbal websites gives a lot of help.  Sorry, they won't let me post some suggested sites.

Get your labs done and make sure your Doc doesnt allow you to go over 10.0 with the TSH.
He may start you on a T4 med usually 25mcg daily or every 2nd day until you are completely hypo.
The symptoms you describe are HYPO.

Remember the times when you could eat a horse and still be hungry...prior to RAI?
My bet is ....that hunger has gone and you could skip a meal without even feeling hungry.
Am I right???
Do you have a craving for sweet foods?

The hair does go dry as if you havent used conditioner...if this is the case get labs done now not in May as by then you will feel like cr@p.

The worst is over :o)

My mother's like that about the 70deg in summer.  Used to make fun of her about that, wanting a sweater if it was under 75.  LOL  Now I am there myself!  HA  She never pushed it enough to find out why she was like that, just lived with it her entire life.

Well, he agrees it's doubtful there's a food or medication allergy involved.  Just thinks it's a case of contact dermatitis...one that no one can determine what touched the skin though.  Riiiight  Wasn't much able to get him to talk about any thyroid connection though.  Oh well...will save it until next time.

They did see it reddish although certainly not angry.  Gave me Triamcinolone cream 0.1% for the itching (I find it's a steroid cream).

Coldness, yes.  It was 70 degrees out and I had to shut the windows in my apartment because I was cold.  Constipation, off and on.  Dry Hair...if that means that my hair feels dried up, or brittle, then yes.  I'm not sure what else to look for, but I think just from those 3 things, you're probably right.   I'll have to give my endo a call and bump up my May 14th appointment heh.

And to Galsal, this site has been a godsend for me going through this.  My body has been screwed up for so long that I have no clue what to look for/expect during this time.

Isn't it great to have folks with their own experience and knowledge around here to bounce off of!

Although it's some-what better now, for a while I would be waking at say 2a-4a.  If I couldn't fall back asleep within five minutes, I'd be screwed and wide awake.  This was for several months and multiple times a week.   It didn't matter if I went to sleep at even an earlier time to sleep better...still kept occurring.

Hopefully the med for hypo will eradicate that.

This is the thyroid 'dumping' as the thyroid releases more hormones at that time of night than any other time.
I would be going for labs as it is also a sign of going Hypo.

Any signs of coldness, constipation, dry hair etc?

Correct, I did have Graves.  I have some Advil PM's that I can try out.  I also have some Ambien that my doctor prescribed about a month or two ago, but I'm really afraid to take those.  I'm already a sleepwalker, I don't need any extra encouragement. :P

I have not had RAI. I have Hashimoto hypothyroid amd can tell you that when thyroid hormone levels are increased or decreased, poor sleep will follow for awhile. The more dramatic the adjustment of levels, the longer it takes to get back to sleeping well.

So with you RAI, there is a huge change in thyroid levels that is confusing your body and you wont 'level' till your on the right level of thyroid med for a while. Did they tell you when you will start any thyroid med?-I'm assuming you had Graves, not Hashimoto.

Tylonal Sleep (might make you groggy though), Magnesium before bed, Lemmon Juice, **Valerian Root supplement works for many**
