Just came from the doc...

Was diagnosed with Hypothyroid back in October.  Just came back from the doc from the doc to get levels checked after 8 weeks.  I told her my symptoms werent getting any better.  She is going to do a full panel as I requested.  I mentioned to her that I have been feeling very tired, depressed and irritable lately.  She then told me it was not due to the thyroid and I needed to see a psychiatrist.  She said the thyroid would not caue me to have any mental symptoms.  I told her about the book I read and she said "reading a book doesnt make you an endo.  Very mad right now.....

Don't mind us, adbomb. We're just having a discussion. :)

utahmomma is right. If your Endo does not even realize that thyroid patients often have anxiety or dpression issues as part of the package, you probably won't get very good care from that doctor.

My PCP knows me very well and he can judge my mental status well enough to treat me for these things. Not all doctors are that way, but most are not quick to send you off to see a psychiatrist.

I have seen two Endo's and they were both cognizant of my mental issues as part of my disease, and fine with letting my PCP treat me for anxiety.

GravesLady, I find the last paragraph offensive and childish.
The part about "true idiot" is amusing, but the last sentence is just not nice.

You need a new doctor.

Depression and other mood changes are clearly on mainstream lists of possible thyroid symptoms.

Where are your levels now. Hopefully, these symptoms will dissipate as you become euthyroid.

Take care

I am not advocating what she needs.  I am advocating whatever it takes.

I am wondering who's the true idiot.

GET A NEW ENDO!!!!!

Antidepressants are a god-send for many of us but thyroid disorders definitely cause mood changes (just ask anyone who has been in hypohell)

The points are;

A) She doesn't need a psychiatrist. They charge BIG money to give you the same drugs my PCP would give me.

B) Her Endo is an idiot.

If autoimmune, all sorts of mind and emotions can be involved and can exacerbate existing ones. Psychiatrist and/ or antidepressants or anxiety medication can help us get over the rough spots of thyroid until we heal.
