hmmm... My endo says the surgeon she is referring me to (appt is Wednesday) has a pathologist in the OR as standard procedure...? She did not act like this was anything unusual...
Hhmmmmmm...I don't know - something just doesn't sound right about that - all major hospitals have pathologists in the room during these types of surgeries - in fact, in any surgery where cancer is suspected. So, I don't know.....maybe get a second opinion. That is your right. Although if you are ok with that, that is cool too. Just my two cents! ;>)
Peace,

I asked at my appt. about checking during surgery but he said no they do not do that and they will monitor every six months post surgery. He also said the risk to parathyroid and vocal cord damage is greater in a total removal than a sub total and safer to monitor and go in again if they need to. Also, said if patholigy comes back cancer will go back in and remove the remainder immediatly. I would prefer a total removal but I can't seem to convince the Dr. he is sure this is the best route. Thank you for response.
Please ask to have a biopsy done during surgery. My surgeon told me it only adds 20mins to the procedure while they await results. It makes the most sense to have it done this way .. also, ask around and be certain the pathology group does alot of these thyroid biopsies and is the best in your area.

Hey,
My FNA came back papillary cancer. During TT, I had some serious calcifications and they biopied other parts. Most of it ended up showing pap with follicular variants....know I have some info on that, just can't remember the minute details. Will they check for nodes as well, with you? I am just a few months past RAI and feeling much better.
I will keep you in thoughts and prayers. Keep posting!
Peace,
Charley
Best of everything to you! I have to second what Venora said. Please make sure they do a complete biopsy while you are still on the table. They found my cancer after they wheeled me into recovery and I had to have the surgery again, for the other lobe, a year later. My best to you!
Hi there I hope they are going to biopsy while you are still under anesthesia.I had FNA and it came back negative cancer but when I had my surgery the second one I might add is when they cound the cancer.so ask your doc about getting biopsy results while you are still under.Keep posting
Love Venora
oops forgot surgery is Feb.19/07
