Two, Two, Two Threads in One!

I even spelled the title correctly.
:o)

First, I had a visit with my GP yesterday. He told me I could try weaning off the Toprol XL. Half a tablet a day and if ten days go well I can stop taking it. YEA!! One less medication.

I told him I would like to have an ultrasound by the end of the year, before my insurance deductable starts over.I had RAI in late January to ablate, and I'd like to see after ten or eleven months if the bugger is dead.

He said an ultrasound wouldn't really tell me exactly what I wanted to know. That would require an uptake scan. We both agreed I didn't want to know badly enough to go off my meds, so that was out. THEN he said (I love this man) the easiest way to find out if I have living tissue would be to run a Thyroglobulin test. I was like "DUH!" and "YES!" at the same time.

So in a few months I'll do that.

He said "you do know twenty years down the line you have a higher risk of cancer." I said yeah, I know, which is why I want to know if it is dead or just managable now.

The we talked tests nd I asked him to run a lot of vitamin and mineral tests that haven't been checked in a year, to see if I have enough or too much.

We talked about calcium. I told him my levels have always been good in the past, but I was a little concerned about where my body was getting it from. I asked if a bone density scan would be prudent and he said absolutely. He thought it was a smart thing to check, but I have to get aproval from my insurance company first.

Seems they don't often pay for a man to have a bone density test. It's a girl thing.  SEXIST DISCRIMINATION!!!!

Uh...let's see...he told me to get out...
That's about it. :o)

Oh, yeah, Two Threads in One!

Public Service Announcement:

People, you new ones over there! Listen up!
The rest of you, too.

We are not doctors. Most of us haven't even been close to a Holiday Inn since our RAI isolation.(LOL!!!) Inside joke. Gotta be in the club.

When someone says "maybe you're low on magnesium" that does not mean go buy a bottle of magnesium tablets. It means maybe you should have your doctor check your magnesium. If we say "maybe taking half a pill twice a week would give you a little less hormone", run it by your doctor.

If someone says chickory root and bladderwack fixed them up, do some research on it. Your doctor can't test you for chickory root or tell you what it's for. Read up on it from sites that don't seem to be selling bladderwack and decide for yourself if it seems prudent.

Then talk to your doctor about it.
He/She is part of the team, may God have mercy on you both.
:o)

It's the ablation.

I had to sign a release form before RAI saying I understood it may not work, I might get cancer, and I won't sue the doctor.

The risk is very small.

But let's look at reality. RAI destroys the thyroid by altering cells so the cells cannot replicate. If there are cells that are not destroyed, they are not ALL going to be healthy cells.

If half the thyroid is destroyed, the other half is going to be funky, and it shouldn't be any big surprise if thyroid cancer develops eventually. Not that it WILL, but the odds are increased.

Which is why I want it D E A D.
My Endo wants it under control.
I want it to be a former part of my body.

Thanks for the sage words of wisdom.

Honestly, which part is the “…you do know twenty years down the line you have a higher risk of cancer...” ?  Is it the ablation, the boatload of tests before and after treatments or simply having a thyroid problem?  It’s all the testing that scares me.
Sometimes I wonder if it's all 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' or something.

Take care.

Well my little cyber friend.................... it's nice to hear your getting your upbeatness again. been a while..........

I'm likin' the idea of the Thyroglobulin test!! You know I have had that same question for years since my RAI.

Yeah the cancer thing...... hmmmm  greater risk............... yeah :(

I know too. - but maybe not right?

I think before I found the care I have know I had no choice but to try certain things to help myself. BUT as you said I reseached the crud out of it before I did it.

Wise to seek doctors opinions on stuff we do or take. and I agree - it should be a team effort - but on both parts.

Talk to you soon!

AR --- Two posts in one - double the fun!  Way to Go on an awesome appt .. now let us know right away when you hear back ok?!

I agree with AR wholeheartedly ..... you must confer with your doc and do research on suggestions .. of utmost importance is you MUST tell your doc any and all supplements otc you are on . it is VITAL!!!!  My doc at my last visit asked me 3X if I took ANYTHING ELSE .. it is so so important!

AR ------- my doc at this week's visit told me (or shall I say reminded me about) the good 'ol risk/benefit thing of calcium depletion in bones taking synthroid ... that just made my day.   ONLY take the am't of synthroid I need to A) do the job of preventing cancer recurrence and make me feel good and the lower dosing the better.

Hey there buddy!  So very happy that you had a productive doctor appointment.  And I concur with the other posters.....it's so nice to see your wit back.  Love it!

I had the bone density scan when I visited the endo for the first time.  This was when I knew I had a nodule, but didn't know it was cancer.  She was not happy with the results, so suggested I take calcium - which I probably should have been doing anyway, but thought my daily multivitamin would do the job.  Apparently not.

By the way.....I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently.  Does that count??  ;-)

AR!! I'm so happy that you found someone to listen and respond.

So glad to see you in good spirits. It sounds like you have a decent doctor who actually cares and discusses with you rather than talking at you. m

NOW!!! can you send him my way.  Next week it will be a pow wow with me and my endo dr.  Its always drama, because he just stares at me while I'm talking.

Take care AR...

Terri

PS.... I ablate  the month before you, so I guess I should be asking some of the same questions.
