I just had an RAI uptake & scan 3 weeks ago. The nukie tech said that the dosage was so low, I did not need to take any precautions! So I guess it just depends on what's wrong with your thyroid. Mine is hyper, so I only needed a low dose.
Now DH and I joke about a "glow weenie". Who needs a flashlight?
Peanutbutter and jelly, jelly. Sorry now that song is stuck in my head.
Good luck to you..I hope you feel better
I had to wait 2 weeks .In a way it was kind of nice isolating myself from everyone. I loved having a nice big bed all to myself. It's not all that bad. If you are unable to do it on your own, epecially if you have small children around, your doctor may admitt you to a hospital where you will be in isolation where everything you use, such as a phone, t.v etc. will be completely covered. Plus it makes it easier if you don't have to share a bathroom. At home I used paper plates and cups, etc. I did not prep any kind of food for my family with bare hands. I am lucky to have 3 baths, so 1 bath was for my use only. The hospital gave me a special card to carry if I planned to travel by plane to Canada, or elsewhere that explains that I had been nuked. I guess so they don't think you have any radioactive material on you for the wrong reasons. Like I've said, it's not all that bad as it sounds.
You will want to talk to the nuclear medicine department of your hospital - it will depend on the amount of I-131 your are given. Usually 1-2 weeks is recommended (but some of us tell our partners 1-2 months) :-)
Here's the information from ThyCa's website (it doesn't address sex but does address sleeping near someone):
Minimize contact (less than 3 feet or 0.6 meter for more than 1 hour each day) with everyone for the first five days, and with small children or pregnant women for eight days.
Do not sit next to someone in an automobile for more than one hour.
Sleep in a separate room and use separate bath linen and launder these and underclothing separately for one week.
Wash your hands with soap and plenty of water every time you use the toilet.
Rinse the sink and tub thoroughly after using them.
Use separate eating utensils or disposable eating utensils. Wash eating utensils separately for one week. Do not prepare food for others.
Flush toilet 2-3 times after use for two weeks after discharge.
Males should sit when urinating to avoid splashing for one week.
Discuss with your doctor how long you should wait before starting a pregnancy after your treatment (usually at least two months for males and six months for females).
If you are breastfeeding, it should be discontinued, but can be resumed for subsequent childbirths.
