Hiatal Hernia

by seasoneddiva, Jun 09, 2008 06:52PM
I have pain in my upper stomach.  Sometimes I have to lie on the floor and stretch my body.  My stomach sticks out really bad.  I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, irritable bowel syntrone and GERD.  I also had to have surgery on my esophageal because it was closing and had to be dialated.

Please help me to figure out when I should go back to the doctor.

This discussion is related to Upper ab pain and burning.

First of all--DO NOT LIE ON THE FLOOR!  :-)

What I mean is, don't lie flat.  With these problems, always have your head and shoulders raised when you lie down or sleep.  You can get a wedge, pile up pillows (but you might fall off of them in your sleep), or acquire a hospital bed.

Chances are, the pain is actually in your esophagus, near the top of your stomach.  It is MOST important that stomach acid not run into the esophagus, as it will when you lie down, because of the hiatal hernia.  Not only is this painful, it will lead to serious problems like esophageal cancer.
