Hi honey:
Ambien is considered a "Z" drug. It is a non-benzodiazepine (such as Valium, Xanax, etc.) but the mechanism of action in the brain is the same. In fact, it is thought to specifically TARGET certain benzo-receptors. What does all this mean?
That you should NOT stop cold turkey off them...w/d's include severe anxiety, cramping, vomiting, but also seizures. I'm not trying to freak you out, but you need to be SMART about your body. You MUST consult a doctor---this is non-negotiable if you value your life, body & health.
Even if you were taking these without a prescription, please call your PCP, or even just make an appointment with a new one, go to an urgent care, ER, etc and tell them the truth. They won't be surprised; Ambien has a VERY high potential for abuse and I know at least 3 close family members who are taking too much right now.
You have a life and people who care about you...so please don't do this c/t...it is simply too risky. Hope to hear from you soon...
Hello, I do know that you are not supposed to quit abruptly without the help of a doctor. I think that would be the smart thing to do...if a doctor was prescribing them to you at any rate. In that case you need to let him know so that he knows you have a problem with them and he can help you with a taper plan (we are not allowed to give tapering information here as we are not doctors).
I think it differs from person to person...my husband was able to quit them with no side effects after years of use (he doubled up whether it was ambien or lunesta) but do not take that as a sign that would happen for you since my husband was very ill and if he did have some withdrawal symptoms he may not have noticed because of the symptoms he was getting from chemotherapy.
If you were getting them off the street keep checking back...it is early yet so in a few hours more people will be here to talk to you. I'm sorry I'm not more help. At this point in time I can barely think, I just wanted you to know that you can get help here and that someone was here and heard you. Please come back. This is a wonderful group.
First thing in the morning, if you got your Ambien from a doctor, call that doctor and make an appointment please.
