getting off of vicodin

Hi, I have been on Vicodin 5/500mg for 6 years. It first started with my knee surgery and I have been getting them refilled ever since. The past two months, I have been sneaking oxycodone from my dad's house. So I have been taking Oxycodone and vicodin probably 2 vicodin a day and about 4 oxycodone. I cant get anymore oxycodone from my dad, he has cancer and really needs the medicine. So I am back to my vicodin, I have a prescription for 4 a day but always take up to 6-7 a day and run out of my prescription early but I end up talking my doctor back into a new prescription. I need to quit! I tried quitting 4 times and each time only made it to day 2, I can handle all of the other withdrawal symptoms except for the body aches, and extreme shaking, almost like convulsions. They are awful! I am almost thinking of going to a rehab facility that can take care of me while I go through this. Am I taking enough to qualify to go to rehab? Or does it matter. My husband is concerned but doesn't really help me get through the withdrawls. I have insurance, so it would be covered to go to a treatment facility. I just really want to stop taking these pills. What do you think I should do?

If you have the means I would go..You will get a lot of support and tools to help you stay clean...These meds are all addictive whether we take them as prescribed or not...Do you have kids? I wish I could go to a treatment center...because even though I take my meds as directed...going off them is a bit$%....I have a lot of stress in my life with 5 kids...a bad marriage that will probably end once I get clean....But I want my old self and life  back...and if that means I'll be in pain...I'll deal with it...There are other alternatives other than pain meds...I just want my old life back...Best of luck to you...You are not alone<3

Hello.  You've taken a step by coming on here.  So be proud of yourself for that.  I am currently trying to quit hydros as well.  Tomorrow is the date I set.  I've quit before.  It was hard, but I managed.  Now I have relapsed.  I can't really tell you if you need rehab or not.  Some do, some don't.  Maybe try to quit without rehab first.  If you fail, then maybe consider it.  If you trust your doctor, talk to him/her about it.  Unless you are like me and want to quit without making a big scene.  Sometimes doctors will give you something to help with the anxiety.  I wish I could offer more advice, but since I'm going through the same thing, the best thing I can do is offer support.  There are many different ways of quiting.  Each person is different.  Just set your mind to it and know that the rough part is just a fraction of time compared to the rest of your "clean" life.  Best wishes and good luck!  You can do it.
