Like anything else you have to try it to see if it will help. Since you're not on any medication there shouldn't be any problems with it other than it might not help. It can have some side effects, as does anything you ingest. But the natural approach, to be done to maximum effect, usually utilizes more than just one remedy and would include lifestyle changes such as exercise, relaxation techniques, therapy, and dietary changes. A good book to read for an overview of remedies is Natural Highs by Hyla Cass, a psychiatrist at UCLA. Michael Moore, a naturopath, wrote a small book on 5-HTP several years back. Good luck.
