XANAX XR--6 MG XANAX XR--"MILITARY ISSUE" ANXIETY????

Hi,
This is the 3rd time I have posted the same question.  I'd appreciate the courtesy of a response.
I've had difficulties with PD and GAD for years.
Here in NYC it takes an act of God to get 0.5 mg alprazolam.
Well, I went to a kind psychiatrist who participates in my Medicare Advantage Plan and has been in the biz for nearly 40 years.  He is sympathetic to the surreal, inescapable, "military issue" amount of stress in my life.
Not only did he raise my Parnate from 60 mg/day to 80 mg/day, but he gave me SIX (6) MG XANAX XR TO BE TAKEN DAILY!!!
I was shocked.  I mean that's way a lot.  There's people out there who need it for a while.  I guess I fall into that category at this time.  It's not something I would want to take ad infinitum.  Perhaps we should thank the Lord that he has made something available to alleviate extreme suffering.
A couple mornings ago I took 3 of the 2-mg Xanax XRs and to be honest, I did not feel much.  I was unpleasantly surprised.  I thought the effects of Xanax preparations were immediate.  Even toward evening, I did not feel much anxiety relief.
Then, to make matters worse, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to fall asleep that night!  So, I took one more tablet of this 2-mg strength.  This makes ***8 mg*** for the whole day.
Well, the next day, it was like someone had me on a Remeron/trazodone/chlorpromazine drip, I was so tired and sleepy and lethargic and couldn't move my body and and and that I spent more than the entire day in bed, and it was one wasted day.
I am still trying to work it out with the Xanax XR, I read wonderful things about it, so a couple nights ago I took 1 of the 2-mg tablets.  Then the next night I took another 2-mg tablet.  Then last night I took 2 of the 2-mg tabs, making the dose 4 mg.  Tonight, upon retiring, I want to take 3 of the 2-mg tabs, making the dose 6 mg.  Now perhaps THAT will make me sleep! :)
The method to my madness is I am TRYING to avoid some of the up-ramp side effects by taking it at night when I am supposed to be sleeping.  Then, let's say tomorrow or the next day, I will take the 3 of the 2-mg Xanax XR tablets in the morning and see what happens.  I hope the results are acceptable.  What does everyone think of my methodology?  Has anyone else had to do this?  Don't worry, I won't take 8 mg/day.  That's enough to make a tank calm down.
Well, that's the story with Xanax XR and me.  I cannot expound on this any longer tonight - I have too much to do right now, to be candid with you, than to worry about benzos right now.  My *** is trying to earn money.
THANKS
Ngok.

You should never take more then 6mg a day. Xanax XR stays in your system for 24 hours so you will always still feel drawsy the next day if you take it in the eve. Xanax bassically has a calming effect thats what it does, its not a miracle drug and yes very very addictive. You say you need to sleep, isnt a sleeppil a better idea then? does the parnate do anything for you? maybe you need a different one?lily

I am SO totally with nursegirl regarding the Xanax dose. To take you from 0.5mg (which I am assuming is the dose you were on) to a virtually unheard of dose of 6mg of XR every day borders on incompetence......or worse! Nursegirl is absolutely correct in suggesting you get a second opinion because, as she stated, something isn't right here, AT ALL! No doctor in his right mind is going to put somebody on 6mg of Xanax per day without starting at a MUCH lower dose and titrating up, if needed.
And if you need long term treatment for your anxiety, the VERY last medication you should be on is Xanax.
Please seek a second opinion. Your current shrink has you on the road to disaster.

The reason you felt "wasted" the next day is because you are on a slow release/longer acting preparation of Xanax, and I would question your dose, AND the way your doc has you taking it.  Sincerely, you need to seek out a second opinion....something isn't right at all. DEFINITELY do not take more than Rx'd...your Rx'd amount is already too high, IMO.
