Tinnitus is noise originating in the ear rather than in the environment. Why tinnitus occurs isn't known, but it can be a symptom of almost any ear disorder, including the following:
*Ear infections
*Blocked ear canal
*Blocked eustachian tube
*Otosclerosis
*Tumors of the middle ear
*Meniere's disease
*Damage to the ear caused by such drugs as aspirin and some antibiotics
*Hearing loss
*Blast injury as from an explosion
Tinnitus can also occur with other disorders that your doctor can check for.
Because a person who has tinnitus usually has some hearing loss, thorough hearing tests should be performed as well as an MRI of the head and a CT of the temporal bone, (the skull bone that contains part of the ear canal, the middle and inner ear)
Attempts to identify and treat the disorder causing tinnitus are often unsuccessful.
Various techniques can help make tinnitus tolerable, although the ability to tolerate it varies from person to person. Often a hearing aid helps suppress tinnitus. Many find relief by playing background music to mask tinnitus. Some people use a tinnitus masker, a device worn like a hearing aid that produces pleasant sounds, especially while trying to sleep. My dad used one of these and found relief for the first time in many years!
While tinnitus in and of itself IS most often harmless, there are some underlying disorders that produce tinnitus as a sort of "warning device," and these disorders require medical attention sooner than later.
I would suggest you see an EENT for a complete examination for the possible causes of your tinnitus. You may very well find that the cause is something as simple as impacted ear wax, which can be removed in the doctors office.
I wish you the best of luck.
