im having a problem falling to sleep. its not getting off to sleep, its when im dropping off in a sleep.
first off all it dosent feel like a real sleep that im dropping into, it feels like im dyeing or drifting in an onconsious state.
after fighting it for awhile, an i actually fall asleep, its the other problem of waking up. it feels like im fighting to wake up, like im fighting for my soul to return to my body.
if anyone can relate to this please let me know, thanks in advance

jimbobjr that is not narcolepsy your neurologist is misinformed. Narcolepsy is when one uncontrollably falls asleep not due to lack of proper sleep. What you have is something else that i once stumbled across while researching restless leg syndrome. I will go through my notes and try to find it for you. Or it may even be as simple as sleep apnea but im sure a trained profesional wouldnt confuse sleep apnea with narcolepsy.

Are you experiencing sleep paralysis to the definition.
There are other similar conditions that dont involve paralysis and are more experienced as a difficulty to become fully awake, where as sleep paralysis you are unable to move and think your awake, commonly  waking up with high anxiety, which makes one feel alert. Sleep paralysis can also give feelings of impending doom.

None the less you are not alone, both are fairly common.

Hi,

A few year back ,I experienced something similar and it was really scary, but only when I had taken antihistamines to help me sleep.. Then sometime this year , I mentioned this to my pharmacist and he explained that it was probably a side effect of the medication and I wasn't the first to have these symptoms. I felt much better knowing this. The waking up part was worse, I was awake but couldn't get up nor speak even though I was trying. I really thought I was dying. I am so scared of medications now.

You could always ask your gp to refer you to a neurologist if your very concerned about it.

Hi i went to a neurologist yesterday and expalined a very similar thing. Although i feel that way during the day aswell. I feel like i'm in a dream just walking the planet. I can do everything normaly but I get tired pretty quickly too. Mine did start with sleep paralysis and then i felt like i was going into a coma and was fighting to wake up. Apparently they think i may nave narcolepsy, where when your sleeping your not gettiung the right kind of sleep so your brains sorta always tired and hence your lack of concious. Apparently it's more common to get it at night but mine goes on through the day too. Is your sleep continous? do you have vivid dreams? When your mind is so tired it goes onto an auto pilot sorta mode where you do everything but no concious awaresness. Hope this helps

It's called Sleep Paralysis.
It's where when you fall asleep, and you want to wake up but you can't
Feels like you are trying your hardest to open your eyes, but cant!
And it feels like you can hear everything around you too.

The feeling you have when your falling asleep... and then your scared...
It's b/c youre getting ready to fall into REM sleep really fast... and you
can feel your eyes rolling in the back of your head and stuff. I get that too
every now and then.

ALL VERY COMMON. =)

Research Sleep Paralysis.
