Hi,
Calcifications are quite normal in breast tissue and they are not harmful. However, when they grow in a cluster( grouped) they become suspicious because they sometimes cluster around a mass.If this is the case,it is proper to biopsy the area as this is the only way to determine if cancer is present. Many biopsies done on clustered calcification though, return a benign finding.
The first step that most physicians will take in treatment of breast calcifications is a mammogram. If calcifications are present the radiologist will determine the pattern of the calcifications and will decide how to continue the treatment.
Benign Calcifications can be caused due to the following reasons:
1) calcifications in a dilated milk duct.
2) calcium deposits in non cancerous cysts.
3) post traumatic fat necrosis calcifications.
4) mastitis.
5) skin calcifications.
6) radiotherapy.
7) calcifications in a fibroadenoma.
Hoping that this information has helped a little.
Best wishes...
Thanks Zouzi i felt better now i was a little worried.you help me understand better.i have a biopsies appointment next one week.will keep you infr Thanks again trustinghim
You welcome!.
Hoping that your biopsy will be uneventful and most of all that the results will be "BENIGN"
Yes, please let us know how things are proceeding.
Sending you my best wishes and good luck!
Just wanted to add that I hope your biopsy is easy and you recover quickly! Depending on the type of biopsy, recovery is usually pretty fast---I've had 3 excisional biopsies and none was as bad as I anticipated. I actually went to a dance class the night after one of them!
The worst part to me was waiting for the results. Try to stay positive and remember what
zouzi said: statistically most biopsies end up with benign results. The important thing is to be vigilant, get screened and follow through on the recommendations if something unusual is found. It is so much easier to deal with "what is" than to worry about "what ifs".
Of course, I wish you BENIGN results, also and look froward to hearing back from you after your biopsy is over.
All the best,
nc
