my cat is suddenly limping

so this is what happened~ she was in my room the entire time nursing her kittens (she gave birth 4days ago) i checked on her around 12 noon to give her food again. she's normally walking and well. around 1pm i checked on her again and she was in her box with her kittens. when she saw me she got up out of her box and thats when i noticed she is limping :( its her left back leg. it sounds thats she's in pain when she walk on it so she doesnt really let it touch the ground to the point that she will just lay down instead. what might be the cause of this?? im still observing her right now and its still the same. she doesnt want to get up and she's just there with her kittens (she's nursing them too) i have to put her dish bowl very near her so that she can eat (she's eating) and also one of my concern is how she will be able to use litter since she doesnt (cant) get up and use her leg :( i hope u can give me some advice please.

Just make sure your vet says it is ok to have her spayed. He should be taking blood tests before surgery to make sure there is no other issues of health.  If the tests are all normal, I am sure he will  want to proceed.

.......and of course we will be waiting for updates, K?

I will pray for a speedy recovery for Nyuuchan and YOU. LOL!

Well I think you should discuss this with the veterinarian who will be doing the surgery.
Cats are usually spayed, ideally, between 5 and 7 months., before their first heat. At this time it is a simple procedure with very little concern for complications. Nyuuchan has had 3 litters so this is a little different.

Normally the cat does not eat or drink the night before a morning surgery, so as not to aspirate during surgery. The vet removes the uterus , tubes and ovaries  preventing the Queen from coming into season and being GRUMPY around that time.

She is in a sedated state for the next 24 hrs and should be given pain meds for when the sedation wears off. She needs to be kept quiet, in a warm bed, and rest. The thing you must watch for is if the stiches become swollen and red . Any discharge from the stitches is also notable these would indicate infection and she would need to see the vet immediately for antibiotics. Some vets automatically give antibiotics now so this does not become a problem. Each cat is different and full recovery time is different , you will know when she is back to her old self.

As U said , since Nyuuchan has had 3 litters already , surgery should be discussed with your vet

.....and you have the support and experience of your friends here at MedHelp!  Please take the plunge . Mama cat is getting older and having litter after litter, unless you are a breeder, takes a greart toll on the health of Mama. So for her sake ????

she's like this ever since she was a kitten haha. she didn't change attitude a bit. but I still love her despite of that ofc. I have grumpy and a kind cat but my love for them are equal^^ anyway I just need a little more push about spaying her in a month or so, I'm doing some research about it and some of my concerns and what to do after surgery in advance just in case I'll decide to get her fix :)

Yes , Cat, she will be feeling better after a week with reference to the leg, but she still needs to be spayed. You have already said there are so many unwanted kittens people just throw them on the streets. Hopefully you can find good homes for her babies.

Discuss the spaying with your Doctor, plenty of "grumpy cats" get spayed and they will give them a shot of antibiotics and if need be a shot of pain meds so you will not have to contend with pills. Those pill pockets are very good for getting kitty to take pill meds . Please look into it.

You have been a good mom to her so far by having her leg pain diagnosed --she is lucky to have you. Did you ever think she is GRUNPY cause she is just tired of having litter after litter. She could end up being a little love muffin after surgery. I would not wait to long ask the doc the soonest you can do this--don't want her pregnant again, right?

yea I agree. I'm hesitant to do so coz I'm afraid of the after surgery effect :( like I said my cat is the grumpy type so I'm wondering if she'll let me
tend to her needs if ever. like giving her the antibiotics orally. she will feel pain after the anesthesia worns out right?? (the painful meow breaks my heart!) I had my male cat neutered 2yrs ago and after the surgery, after some hours when he woke, he was making the uncomfortable-seems in pain meow! well that's understandable after all. and he was not hard to handle coz of his kind nature. so my concern is, my female cat will be in much pain coz the surgery will be complicated compared to a male cat right?? :( as much as I want to, this concerns of mine is hindering me. but I still have like more than a month more to decide since they can spay after the kittens reach in 4th week

right now my cat still can't use her left leg and still putting all the weight on the right. but I can see a little improvement like she can now move her body compared before and doesn't seem in pain when I touch her leg :) I guess the effect of the calcium won't be seen right away like for example she can walk like she used to lol. maybe she'll be perfect in a week or less! lets see by then :)

Yes there are so many strays in all countries. That is why we are so adamant about having them spayed at 6 months so we do not contribute to this problem.

There is nothing worse than seeing litters of kittens left on their own to starve. or , get killed by cars or worse. There are VERY SICK individuals out there. Spaying is the responsible thing to do.

Your Mother Cat should be fine. Better than having litter after litter, Ageed?

Please keep us posted, K?

Yes atleast this post might be somehow useful for those who will have the same or close situation as mine in the future :)
Not yet, But i'll make sure that they are wanted. but on how much they will be taken care of after that, i dont know. As much as i want to keep them all, i just cant. And its also a problem here in our country. So many stray cats, and some owners just throw kittens in the street. as a cat lover, it also breaks my heart. Sometimes i give food to those stray nearby that eats on the garbage bags.
actually i kept my cat indoor whenever she's in heat. We all bear the noise for a week lol. she goes in heat every 2months. Indeed getting her spayed is really the best choice but lemme think about it some more :) yes thank u, i'll keep u guys updsted.

Well good for you for helping this poor lady out, I'm glad it was nothing serious.and easily fixed...and thk you for enlightening us on this, I can't say I've heard of that happening before.

Please DO have her spayed, the recovery is much easier on her than to be continually having kittens, there are risks with that too as you've already seen.

Have you been able to find good homes for all these kittens? Unwanted kittens are such a growing problem in our country...breaks my heart to see so many homeless or shelter cats. Be responsible an have your girl spayed please, you can do so when the kittens are ready to be weaned at 6-7 weeks, don't wait any longer or she'll be pregnant again!!!

I hope she'll soon feel pain free and able to use her limb, keep us updated ok

Hello! Thank u guys for the response, it helped me calmed down. I took her to the vet, her problem is hypocalcemia. Its lack of calcium due to her pregancy. She's 5yrs old and this is her 4th time to give birth. Thank goodness it was nothing real serious and the vet just gave medicine for calcium supplements. Now i can be at ease. i love my cats so much that it hurts me when i see them in pain. Now im thinking if i should allow her to be spayed (i know its for the best) but i kinda worry about her recovery process since it seems neutering a male cat is easy when it comes to recovery. i had my male cat neutered yr 2013
P.S my cats name are nyuuchan (female) nyuuchii (male) :)

I agree 100% with Opus and Slay. Just let us know what the vet says, please.
You may want to call your vet first to find out his opinion. If he wants you to bring her in:

You can put a towel in the bottom of a laundry basket for her and her kittens. Make sure they are all warm and then cover the entire basket with a sheet tied at the bottom. Hoping your laundry basket has holes in the sides.  This is last resort if you do not have a carrier.

If you must use a towel to throw over mama or 2 pair of garden gloves and long sleeve jacket so as no to get bit or scratched.  Try and get her when not feeding and just waking up.

Good Luck--this will be tricky, but if the vet needs to see her, then do you best.

Sincerely,
CML

I agree she does need a Vet, YES a blood clot is life threatening, she can hv a heart attack or stroke anytime. Not likely to need any surgeries...probably just a medication. If that is what it is, I am not a Vet so this is just an opinion.

It is important u take the kittens with her incase it takes awhile, they are too young to be without mommy for even a couple hours, make sure they are kept very warm in a carrier covered with a blanket
She is in pain and needs to be helped.....

Hi there.  Melinda here.

Forgive me, I confuse easily, what is mama kitty's name?

Kitties are small and things that are going wrong can progress before you know it.  My opinion is that she needs to see the  vet right now.  No more observing.  You can at least get the vet's opinion of the possibilities.  The vet can examine her, hands-on, and then together you can decide on what can be done within your financial means along with what needs to be done.  Never be afraid to ask the vet for a payment arrangement.  The. worst that. can happen in that case is you're turned down.

You have a responsibility to mama.  She's hurting for some reason.  Find out what it is and do what you can.

Also, do take her babies with her.  Use a towel to wrap around her.  Use a pet carrier if you have one or can borrow one.  You might get hurt.  Be brave & strong.

Blessings,
  M

blood clot? is it life threatening? she went to poo and pee a while ago but when she stands she seems to be in pain coz she makes a weird sound of meow. that must be hard just only using her 3 legs. I hope it won't be a serious injury since I don't think I have enough money for expensive and major surgeries. I'm not sure how I will be able take her to vet since she have kittens, plus this cat is a bit of a grumpy cat ever since. she hiss and act as if she'll bite u if u touch her carelessly :( is it wrong for me to just observe more before I decide? or is it ok to go to the vet without her and ask what to do?

Sudden lameness in a limb could also indicate a blood clot, but normally the pain is excruciating when this occurs. Best of luck for poor mamma, I sure hope she'll be alright

that's what I thought at first too! that maybe her leg got numb from laying position. and the limping started just yesterday in a matter of hour, (that's why it got me surprised and wondering why this happened) she was totally fine from previous days since she gave birth until yesterday noon. she went pee yesterday morning too coz she can still use her leg. she was supposed to pee and poo during the night (like usual time) but she didn't even manage to. I tried putting her in her litter box but she can't go since she minds her leg. she hasn't got up since and just laying with her kittens. she's eating though, like the usual amount she eat, and also drinks. but I have to help her still :( right not its still 3:30am so later when the situation wont improve, I'll take her to the vet. and yea doing that I have to take extra care for her kittens too :( thanks for the reply!

she could have somehow injured it during birthing, or possibly just has gone kinda numb from laying in one position way too long with birthing/nursing etc. but she NEEDS to get up well enough to eat and use her litter box, you mean she hasn't used it in 4 DAYS???? if not than of course this is a medical emergency....you will need to take her (and nursing kittens along too) to a Vet asap...
first try picking her up and putting her in the box....see if she pees and poops...with help getting in there.
but even if she does and still unable to put weight on that leg she really does need to see a Vet. its not only her life but also the lives of those newborn kittens that you need to be concerned over.
wishing you and the family tons of luck...and love, please keep posting and letting us know how everything progresses....♥
