Head Banging child

I have a 20 month old son who has terrible temper tantrums. It isnt, however, the tantrums that upset me. It is the fact that when he is mad, he bangs his head. He hits it into walls, furniture, pavement, concrete, you name it. The upsetting thing is that he will do it once, and then cry because it hurts, but he continues to do it over and over again. He will sometimes do it 5 or 6 times before I can get to him to stop him. He gets large bruises on his forehead. Could this be a symptom of Aspergers? Should he get a helmet? What can I do to help him?

What do you bang your head on , and yes if its a hard surface you could get a concussion ,I think speaking to the doctor is a good idea , are you anxious about something ?

I would have him evaluated by a developmental specialist for starters.  My husband and two boys all have ASD issues.  Asperger's as well as other ASDs can have anger issues associated with them.

You can also try giving him a special stuffed animal that he can squeeze when he is upset.  That may take him mind off of banging his head and also help to calm him down.

Talk to his pediatrician and get a referral to a therapist, and ask for some coping strategies for the child.
