very big problem

Hello everybody
I have a very big problem
My total cholesterol is 179 which is normal ,but the HDL is 32 and the LDL is 132.
What should I do ?
I have been taking Omega 3 for a year now and there are no results
My dyastolic blood pressure is always 9 .
I am 30 years old.
Should I start taking statins ?

Hi,

You'll need to ask your doctor that question. None of them usually have serious side effects and they are all quite similar regarding effect and side effects.

Anyway, why do you think about using statins? Your cholesterol is normal, except a somewhat low HDL, and statins do NOT increase HDL.

To increase HDL you need to exercise, or eat healthy. An LDL of 132 isn't dramatic at all and may be corrected through eating less saturated fat and carbs. Your total cholesterol is normal and I don't think any doctor would give you statins if you don't have extreme risk factors of coronary artery disease or stroke.

If you are overweight, lose some weight. If your nutrition is wrong, ask a nutritionist or your physician for some advice.

Welcome and thanks for your question. Really, your numbers are not horrible as your LDL is just a little high as it should be under 130 and HDL needs to get over 40. Also, I think that you have an incorrect diastolic BP  because if it were really 9, high cholesterol would be the least of your problems.

No one here is qualified to tell you if you should start a statin, that's a decision you need to make with your doctor based on your history and other risk factors. A statin has very little effect on HDL and I would think you could bring your LDL down with lifestyle changes.

The easiest way to increase HDL is regular cardio exercise, about 30 - 60 mins most days a week at 75% of your max predicted heart rate (220-age). Make sure to get your doctor's approval before starting any new exercise program. You could also ask about Niacin, however recent studies have found that the type of HDL particles created by Niacin are not as effective in removing LDL from your system. You can watch your diet as well, cut out as much processed foods as possible along with empty carbs like breads, sugars, pastas and alcohol. Also, stay away from fast foods.

I would try this for at least 6 months before starting a statin, especially at your young age. Like I said however, this is a decision you need to speak with your doctor about.
