Having a hysterctomy in Dec.- looking for some help with some questions...

Has anyone had the endometriosis so bad that they had to have a hysterectomy because none of the medications to treat it would work? I am having one performed on Dec. 12th and wanted to know what things to expect right after surgery and then a month or 2 after. My dr. insists on me keeping 1 ovary because I'm 31 so I will have a bit of estrogen and I'm not sure if I will be taking any hormonal supplements. Main thing I would like to know is there really a loss of sexual drive. I am getting married in July and for the 1 1/2 years mine has been really non-existent and my fiancé has been driving me insane since then.

I had endometriosis at age 23, by the age of 25, there was nothing left to save.  That was 25 years ago.  The hysterectomy helped quite a bit. It probably saved my life.  The last year I had periods that lasted 3 months at a time, and were quite heavy.  I was down to 90 lbs.  After, I felt great, gain the weight back to a health 125.  I've been on HRT for the past 25 years. So if they can save the Ovary, that's great news. Natural menopause is better.  I've have it come back 3 times now, and just learned that I have it again.  The endometriosis, always has to be watched.  But by knowing you body, you will know what to look for.  According to my Doc's, they said that they were shocked that I ever had children (I have 3) I started young.  Although I'm not looking forward to being on the Lupron for the next 6 to 12 months, it's better than being in pain every day.  LOL with your surgery, take care and following the post surgery orders!!!!!  Very Important.  I didn't and found myself back in surgery for major adhesions later.  Sam

thanks for this response, it is useful for me too. i am struggling with knowing endo pain and what is going on. it is all a bit new to me, so this is helpful. I also read a book by jenifer marie lewis, where she had a hyst at age 27 I thin and said the same- she wished she would have doen it earlier.
best wishes to both of you , maybe we can all keep sharing our experiences and get the posts on this forum up a bit.

Hi Ducky,

My name is Darlene and I am 47 (for 2 more weeks) LOL.    I had endo. so very bad that
in my lung it would collapse monthly.  I had periods that would last 2-3 weeks, then I would have no period, then it would come with a vengence, the last period I had lasted
29 days...  after many diffferant kinds of birth control and Lupron Depot shots monthly many different efforts to try and stop my period for years .. No such luck..
OK....  Here is the scoop on what haappened to me...

I had a radical hyst complete with overies and cervix. I have nothing left.  I was told that I could not have any HRT drugs because that would cause the endo to continue
to grow (not sure how or why).. I had cannot believe how MUCH better I feel... I was trapped within my endo. body.. It consumed me monthly, it was very tough.  If I would have known that my lung would stop collapsing and the unknown would no longer be there and I would not have the extremely painful periods anymore I wondered WHY did I wait so LONG ? I was 45 and I already had a kid...

I knew I did not want any more so I was ok with that part.   Please make sure there is NO other option for you,   Especially if you want a child....
SEX IS MUCH BETTER !!!!!!!
Also I did not lose any feeling or sensation (if u know what I mean) LOL
It worked for me. I can only hope it works for you. I had a wonderful DR that knew all about endo.  I was very blessed in that department.
Good Luck & let me know if you would.
GOOD LUCK,  with SURGERY DECEMBER 12  I WILL SAY A LITTLE PRAYER FOR YOU..................
                                            Good luck to you,     Darlene
