Cant find specific topic? lightheaded upon waking before even sitting up and rising?

In the "ask a doctor" forums, I could not find the specific category that lightheaded/vertigo would be under. Maybe that can be a new category? My quandry is this; First of all, I am a 50yr old male 5'5" and 155lbs. I'm B-12 Anemic that requires monthly IV shots. I have had a real bout w/ Cervical Radicilitis a few yrs. back. Also have much artery plaque build up. I do have probs w/ inner ear wax impact that simply does not drain naturally that requires regular vacuum or irrigation, but ENT does not feel that is a cause of my dillema. I haveI read the first five years of community comments in general forum in regards to folks describing there lightheaded dizziness symptoms to each other and gave up continuing further, so my inquiry possible answer or solution might of been posted in more recent comments. I related to much of the descriptions of there symptoms but in the first 5 yrs. of comments that I read, I saw nothing as to my specific inquiry. Here it is as follows; Many times over past few years I wake up very lightheaded. Comes and goes. Usually at least once a week. Sometimes 2-3 mornings in a row. Will last maybe up to 45 minutes as it gradually fades. THE REAL KICKER is that the feeling is there upon waking but before I even sit up? It is aggravating cuz when i've mentioned this to various docs over the past couple years, they seem to just shrug it off and say something like "thats interesting" or "i don't know why that would be". I know that I should of been more assertive with the doctors regarding the matter. Thanku to any who might read this. regards matt nordquist

Laura,
that shed some lite on the subject. much obliged. have to look into cilia possibility. i know the ear doc told me he's never seen such inner ear impact but that it just doesnt drain naturally. i have it vacuumed out at the docs every three months. had that prob at least 20something years. the irritating thing is the itching when i feel movement. i sought writing on orthostatic hypertension just now and it seems to mainly refer to the act of standing up? there might be something to that with me but what intrigues me in this dilemma, is that upon waking, it is prior to even lifting my head from pillow to sit up, that i am most lightheaded. i do think pillow can be an issue as i often sleep on couch with tv directly across so my neck is often completely turned from torso. i'm also thinking my compressed discs in upper spine and neck might be a big part. im gonna bring this all up next week at the good doctors and will post update. nice tip too on the Co-Ezyme Q10. been on 40mg. simvistatin (Zocor) for past few years to lower cholestrol though my level is in a healthy range or within normal standards for average folk, but am recommended to be very low. thanku much ms. laura.
regards, matt

Hi Matt,
I would take a look at articles on orthostatic hypertension if your dizziness persists during the day. Some medications have cardiovascular affects which result in orthostatic hypertension. What helped me is sleeping with an extra pillow since having a raised head while sleeping helps with the spinning feeling when waking. Coffee and salt help raise the blood pressure, but I limit those as it's not healthy in the long term.

Another possibility is your cilia in our inner ear got flattened with secretions dripping back into the ear. I kept my head over the edge of the bed too long (will refrain from saying what activity I was engaged in ) and had the vertigo you were mentioning when laying down before getting up. The doc explained that was what happened and it resolved itself in 3 weeks when the cilia naturally came back up. I don't know what they do to clean out your ear wax, but it may be worth correlating when you get this done to the frequency of feeling dizzy in the morning. Perhaps there's another method which limits the amount of fluid draining back into the ear canal. I think your doctor shrugged his shoulders as there's nothing medically they can do to bring back the cilia into a healthy position. At the time, my vertigo was worse laying down and anytime I lowered my head below my shoulders. The cilia play an important role in balance.

Take care and hopefully you find a solution soon!
Laura

p.s. if you have arterial plaque, heart specialists are now recommending taking Co-Enzyme Q10. The Ubiquinol version is best, 200mg recommended to help the blood vessels. It's also shown to reduce blood pressure to the point some are able to get off bp medication.
