You may have strep throat. I would go in to get a strep test and culture. Do you have a fever? The white dots are probably pus which is typical with strep throat and you can bleed a little from irriation.

This does sound like strep! As a child, did you have your tonsils and/or adnoids taken out? Both these glands can hold on to a step virus and amplify it when it finally presents in a way that you can recognize as an illness.

I had this problem when I was little, and needed both those glands removed so I could get over it. It was litterally twice a year, every year, from kindergarten to 7th grade.

Of course, this could also be a "mock" illness. There is a bug going around right now (and I had it) that looks almost exactly like strep, but isn't. For me, I only had the spots and a little headache, instead of the full-blown illness. That could also be what's going on here.

The only other thing that comes to mind for me is possible side-affects of smoking or second-hand smoke.

Hope this helps!

FYI, you can still get strep with or without tonsils. It does happen less frequently though. Usually, with classic strep you  get a high fever. However, it is possible to get it without the high fever too and to be an asymptomatic carrier.
