Please help me with my situation..

Hi,

Recently (2 weeks back) I had a sexual encounter (Oral by her and Vaginal insertion) with a woman. I didn't wear a condom during the oral but used it during vaginal insertion. Unfortunately it has been ripped during the intercourse and I could not notice it until I finished the act. I was hell scared from then on. Although the woman claims to be 100% sure that she is healthy I am very concerned. This encounter is the first one in my life. After this exposure I had the following physical changes.

1. Just after the day of the act there existed a sense of urinating frequently that lasted for few days (no pain, burning sensation and puss) and I dont feel it any more.

2. A week after exposure I ate lots of ice cream (around 0.7 ltrs). Immediately the next day after that I had a very sore throat which included cough and mucous. I visited a doctor who gave me ROXID(antibiotic) with ascorill she said this might be strep. After a week I still have this so I visted an ENT specialist who asked for a blood test and a CT scan. After the tests he diagnosed that I have "concha bullosa" with a deviated septum along with swollen tonsils. He gave me antibiotic "ofloxacin".

Following are my blood test results:

total leucocytes : 8000
lymphocytes: 37% (22-44 required)
monocytes: 2% (0-4 required)

Please let me know what are my chances of contracting a STD (HIV in particular). I am very scared.

I forgot to mention some thing....I developed few(3-4) red colored pimple like lesions on my back a week back. Although all of them got cleared within 2-3 days, one still persists. Is this some kind of HIV rash? Do HIV rashes come along with other symptoms as well?

Here in Pakistan, MEIA or ECLIA Cobas 6000, utilizing electrochemiluminescene, are normally used by the Pathological Laboratories. All the antibody tests, including Rapid, Ora Quick and ELISA are reliable, accurate and you can trust the results reported. For an antibody test, time is important. Tests are reassuring after 6-7 weeks and conclusive after 3 months.

Kindly let me know the tests that I should take at the end of both 6 and 12 weeks....I heard ELISA test is accurate enough to determine the status or is there any other reliable tests...I am very worried right now in spite of these assurances hope you can understand that.

Abhthvu Bhayya ! First of all, relax and calm down. Not everyone contracts HIV from a single act of unprotected sex with an HIV+ partner. In your case, there are many odds in your favor. If she is not an HIV+ (as its rate should be very low in common polulation of India), then there is no risk, because one can not give something he/she does not have.

Having said that, condome failure puts you under a risk (no matter how small it is), because you can not judge the HIV status of anyone just by looking at his / her face or general health. You should also not believe in words when dealing with such kind of serious matters.

You were wise and smart using protection for penetrative sex (oral sex is a no risk thing, even if done unprotected) however your protection failed and turned your protected sex into unprotected. This is the only problem associated with this barrier which otherwise provides total protection against HIV and other STD's.

Though your symptoms appear to be due to common illness and do not look like ARS, never concentrate too much on symptoms, they are misleading in most of the cases and many actually infected people remain asymptomatic.

What I can suggest you, get yourself tested after 6-7 weeks of the exposure with a follow up test done after another 6 weeks to get a conclusive result and lay all your worries to rest permanently.
