is HSV1 only an oral infection?

Hello Everyone,

I am so sorry, I really don't have any idea about HSV1 and was recently diagnosed through IGG test.  No IGM tested for me.  Result says:
Immunology/Serology/Infectious Diseases:
Normal (Negative) results: Herpes( HSV2 IgG,) -<0.5

Abnormal (Positive) results: HSV1 IgG- 6.9

I never had a cold sore in my life but got some pimples on my face sometimes, I have some mouth ulcers before but I thought it's just normal just because I accidentally bit my tongue, etc.  Can someone please explain about my results and about this HSV1, I don't know if it's genital HSV1 or oral  one.  I have 1 big pimple in my groin now, is that an HSV1?  will it become HSV2? I thought HSV2 is only genital? why am I reading some of the comments that there's HSV1 genital?

Thanks for the info again, sorry for breaking this telling you I have last question.  I promise this will be a clear question now.  Let's forget about HSV-2.

If my bf has HSV1 orally and I have HSV1 genitally, will he get  genital HSV1 if he has HSV1 orally already?

Sorry - I'm not on this forum all the time.

I'm not sure I really understand your questions, but some thoughts:

If a man with oral HSV-1 gives a non-H woman oral sex, he could transmit his HSV-1 from his mouth to her genitals. She would then have genital HSV-1, because it is on her genitals - but it is still HSV-1. It will not be HSV-2, because the giver does not have HSV-2, so he could not give her HSV-2.

HSV-2 is NOT the same thing as "genital herpes." HSV-2 can be either in the mouth or on the genitals. If it is in the mouth, it's oral HSV-2. If on the genitals it's genital HSV-2.

I don't understand your last question, but here goes: if you only have genital HSV-1, the only way you can be infected with HSV-2 is if you have sex with someone who has HSV-2. I hope some of that helps.

sorry, one last question.  How does HSV2 become HSV2? I mean the origin.  I'm slightly confused with HSV2 coz all I know if someone with HSV1 had oral sex with the partner, then he/she will have genital herpes either HSV1/HSV2.  If I have genital HSV1 and my partner doesn't know he has HSV2 genital, I won't be infected with HSV2 anymore?

HSV-1 will not become HSV-2, nor vice versa. They are two separate viral types.

The only way to be sure that your boyfriend doesn't have HSV-2 is if he gets a reliable type-specific blood test. You may have been lucky and didn't get it from him even if he's carrying it.

If he has had HSV-1 since childhood and you've had HSV-1 for a while (which seems to be the case from your high antibody count), you will not re-infect each other anywhere on the body. Feel free to relax and enjoy each other!

I have another question, let's say my boyfriend has HSV1 oral and I have HSV1 genital, will my bf get HSV1 genital from oral and vaginal sex? And will I get HSV1 oral from kissing him and oral sex?

Sorry, I have another question, since I had sex with my boyfriend and for so long we didn't have sex, does that mean my boyfriend doesn't have an HSV2, right? because he has, I would've been infected already, right?  He said he had cold sore during his childhood, if he will perform oral to me, let's say, my HSV1 is only oral, not genital, will I get HSV1 genital?

thanks for the information, I am still with him but due to this LDR, haven't had sex since january after he left.  That why I decided the day before yesterday to get tested.  I told him the results and he doesn't care bout it, he said he doesn't need to get tested since we did it and he has it already.  I am only worried that it will become HSV2 because I read my doctors advice that, from an HSV1 who will perform an oral, it will become HSV2, so I told him, maybe he has HSV2 coz I performed oral on him last year.

The HSV types don't cross the waist inside the body. So genital HSV-1 will not turn into oral HSV-1, and vice versa. Same with HSV-2.

Either type can be above or below the waist (or both). HSV-1 can be oral or genital, and HSV-2 can be oral or genital. If your pimple is HSV-1, it's considered to be genital HSV-1.

Your boyfriend cannot get HSV-2 from you if you don't already have HSV-2. He might get HSV-1 from you if he doesn't already have it. If he already has it (about 65% of Americans do), he won't re-contract it from you. Has he been tested?

Your ab count for HSV-1 is pretty high. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say you've had it longer than a year. A lot of folks who have HSV-1 got it as young kids, when their family members kissed them on the mouth.

It's possible to have the virus and not have any symptoms until years later. In fact, up to 90% of folks with HSV of either type don't know it, because of a lack of recognizable symptoms.

Are you still with you boyfriend? I recommend you ask him to get tested with a reliable type-specific blood test as well, to put your mind at rest. Hang in there, sweet girl.

I have another question, if I have HSV1, I have performed oral sex with my boyfriend last year, if I have performed oral on him, will he get HSV2? then since we had sex, will I get HSV2 also? sorry I don't know really know the process of this.  Me and my bf engaged in sex December-January last year.  Then I got tested yesterday which I've stated the result above, does that mean, but I had papercuts August 2012 frequent one where grace told me it isn't herpes, that time I didn't get myself checked for herpes.  So my question is, I performed oral with my boyfriend last year December-January, does this mean, I caught the HSV1 from him? or I already have HSV1 and I infected him? Someone can get HSV2 from HSV1+ oral sex, right? then why am I negative in HSV2?  I'm sorry, I 'm so confused.. :(

my last exposure was January 2013 with my new boyfriend, then nothing after that.  My papercuts were August 2012 and haven't engaged with sex with him that time.  If someone has genital HSV1, are you gonna have HSV1 orally as well?

Please don't feel bad about asking questions - that's what this forum is for.

So if I understand you, you last had sex last November? Or did you have sex between then and now? What constituted "exposure" in January?

I'm afraid sometimes my outbreaks do present as papercut-like tears in the genital area. H presents in a number of ways.

Yes, an outbreak anywhere between the belly button and the mid-thigh are considered "genital herpes" - the virus lives in a nerve bundle at the base of the spine, and can travel up any number of nerve pathways from there to cause an outbreak anywhere in the boxer short area.

However, a lot of things can look like H. Your pimple could also be just a pimple. The very next time you have one down there, go and get it swabbed. It will tell you whether your HSV-1 is indeed genital.

Did you get an antiviral prescription?

Hang in there. Genital HSV-1 doesn't recur as much as oral HSV-1. And about 65% of Americans have HSV-1. You're not at all alone!

hi catinbarefeet,

Thank you very much for your explanation.  The last time I had sex was a year ago, so I'm think I don't have the genital one.  However, I've had some paper cuts on vagina it was August 2012, and my GP just told me it's just normal due to dryness and she said there's nothing like clusters on my vagina.  My last exposure was January, and just got tested positive for HSV1 but never had a cold sore as I remember.  The pimple on my groin is painful but tolerable just like the pimples we have.  And I've got some pimples at the back, those are big ones and painful, so I assume those are the effect of HSV1? does that mean, mine isn't genital one?  I'm sorry for asking you a lot of questions. :(

By the way, there's also a possibility the pimple is not from HSV at all!

Deep breath darling. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

The two HSV types (1 & 2) are not named by the site of infection. Either type can infect the body pretty much anywhere. However, each does have its site of preference. HSV-1 prefers to live above the waist, while HSV-2 prefers to live below the waist. If they infect the "other" site, they tend to sleep more and reactivate less. One will not "turn into" the other.

From your test, it appears you've had HSV-1 for a while. It's possible that the "pimple" on your groin is from this. However, to be absolutely sure, the very next time a similar symptom presents, try to have it swabbed by your doctor before 48 hours has passed so you don't risk a false negative. A positive result from a PCR swab is pretty definitive.

There might also be a possibility it's from HSV-2, but you would need to test again in 4 months to be sure. At the moment, you do not appear to have HSV-2 antibodies in your system. If you've contracted Type 2 quite recently, you may not have a positive result for another few months.

I hope some of this helps. Good luck to you.
