What to do when the experts don't know

I'm a 53 yr old female with uncontrolled HTN. About every 2-3 months my bp will elevate and no matter what I take It still spikes dangerously high, like right now it 170/118. Last week Wed 8/31/11 it was 230/140 and I went to the ER with no answers. Even after taking 2 Clonidine and 100mg of metoprolol it only went down to 150/100.  All this week I've been battleing this and actually took too much Clonidine but I don't want to stroke. Went to the Urgent care the same day and The Dr. did nothing but sit and talk with me and suggested that there may be another reason besides Cardiac since the med is not working. But no help from him. I'm getting really frustrated with my Dr. cause he don't know what to do either.  I've had a complete cardiac and endo check up without answers. Now what to do. I'm tired of taking medications and being tired, if some one has any suggestions please let me know. thanks kb

Something you can do yourself to build up your immune system, and help control HTN. Do the kapalbhati for 20 minutes, twice a day, anulom vilom for 30 minutes, twice a day, and bhramri once a day.You will notice the blood pressure getting to normal gradually over a few weeks.Continue the pranayam, once a day, after you are better. Your feedback will help others.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Kapalbhati pranayam -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill, and HTN people do it gently.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 21  times.

Welcome and thanks for the questions. It can be frustrating to determine what is causing hypertension as there are many causes. Also, in many cases the cause is idiopathic meaning there is no cause. There are other things that can cause spikes including outside influences. As far as medical conditions, take a look at this link and it will provide more information;

The best thing you can do is work with your doctor and let him find an underlying cause if possible. The first thing you need to do is cut out all outside stimulus like stress, lack of sleep and caffeine as well as reduce your sodium intake to lower your fluid load. Then, let your doctor start looking at the other systems in your body for an answer.

Good luck,

Jon
