Could my magnesium level of 1.9 be low enouh to cause symptoms

I have been having chronic headaches since December 15 after going to the ER for visual disturbance in my L eye. Magnesium level at that time was 1.9mg/dl.  I was hypertensive at 218/116. and developed headache within 15 minutes of the visual problem which resolved when headache began. ER ? migraine of which I never experienced an aura before.  I've had chronic headaches with disequilibrium and dizziness prior to Dec 15th but able to take Tylenol at first sign and headache and other symtoms would subside. CT in the ER showed old lacunar infarct L basil ganglia.  No acute problem. Further testing week later with MRI MRA showed chronic sm blood vessel ischemia gliosis in the L periventricular region. My doctor put me on ASA 325 mg daily and Simvastatin  40 mg daily after receiving  those results. My  total cholesterol is 148 and HDL 41 ratio 3.6.  I remain on HCTZ 25mg daily and Paxil 10 mg daily.  I've been taking for years with diagnosis Fibromyalgia, HTN.. My symptoms are headaches muscle pain(fibro) muscle fasilitations, fatigue, parethesia, disequalibrium, dizziness, spatial disorientation, forgetfulness, RLS,insomnia, extrasystoles, clumsiness, difficulty finding words. I've been living like this for awhile.  I am also just menopausal having not had a period since Nov 07.  I am 51 years old.  Could I be low in Magnesium even at normal level 1.9.  I take  a loop  diuretic, have Fibro, have Migraines, and I am menopausal all of which could be a factor.  I was also tested for Lupus,MS, Rheumatoid factor etc. with all results negative. All labs normal.  Could my stroke be playing a factor in my symptoms?  My HTN is borderline (it was greatly elevated at time of migraine) it was 140/90 when I left ER. I am to see Neurologist Jan 30th.  I wanted anopinion prior to going.  Should I even approach him on this subject of Magnesium?  I hope that it could be that simple.  I am very suseptable to medication effects and really don't want to take Topamax or other migraine meds if at all possible.  However I seriously have had a headache of some sort daily since Dec 13.  Thank you for listening to all my ramblings. I am having difficulty working my 40 hour week as a Nurse in a long term care facility due to the fatigue and headaches. I just need some answers.

I don't have any idea about your medical situation, but as far as Magnesium, my neurologist without even testing for it, suggested that I take Magnesium Oxide rather than just Magnesium.   For what it's worth.

Hi,
Thank you for your update. How are your present electrolyte levels and blood pressure readings? Primary headaches such as migraine usually respond to medications and avoidance of triggers.A more updated imaging study such as MRI would indeed very helpful in evaluating your symptoms. Do keep us posted how it goes. Take care always.

Looking back on this1/09 post, my Neuro thought the MRI was more migraine oriented than stroke as previously read by Radiologist.I'm still having the  same above symptoms and now going for second MRI 10/31/11 to rule out  MS. The only difference is the frequency of headaches as I am now on Topamax.

Hi,

Magnesium deficiency has been associated with conditions like asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, mitral valve relapse and migraines.
Studies have shown that people in industrialized countries do not consume enough magnesium.
The normal magnesium levels range from 1.8 – 3.0 mg/dL. However the test results vary from one lab to another.
It is important to know when was the last time you got the levels checked. Please go ahead and discuss this with your neurologist and let us know if you have any other questions.
