Post Concussion Headache

My daughter is 13 she is an Ice Hockey goalie that was hit in the head with a hockey puck during her stretch before a game.  She had a helmet on but no mouth piece and wasn't looking as she was talking to the other goalie. She was not knocked out just stunned. Anyway this happened on Feb 18th and the recovery has been very slow.  Her doc put her on amitriptline and it seamed to take away the headaches.  She finally went 15 days symptom free just to have a very big headache causing her to have an eye twitch on 3/18.  She said the pain was an 8 on a scale from 1 - 10 and it was at the temple. The headache eventually went away but the twitch is still there. She had a CT scan on the 6th and it came out normal.   Should I be concerned about the twitch or the length of recovery.  She wants to play hockey again but I feel we should wait another month.  What do you think?

Hi,
How is your brother? Was there a CT scan or MRI last year when he suffered  concussion? While visual symptoms are usually associated with migraine aura, it is best that he checks with his doctor especially if the symptoms increases in severity for further evaluation. Both preventive and abortive prescription medications may also help. Take care and do keep us posted.

My brother is 17 and suffered a concussion last year in football. At the beginning of this year he started getting migranes with blurred vision about once a month. But lately he has been getting them more frequently with the blurred vision and this morning he needed help down the stairs. Should my family be concerned or is it just foods he is eating being so young.

Hi,

I suggest that you continue to observe your daughter's symptoms .The CT scan showed normal results and the headaches have been responsive to the medications.

Have you informed the neurologist with regards to the twitching? This may not be something serious. It could be something nerve related secondary to the injury. This may spontaneously resolve by itself. However, have her neurologist assess this just to make sure.

Is there any associated eye redness or tearing?

Any redness or swelling in the area of the twitching?

If there are no neurologic deficits like weakness , numbness, any learning disabilities and memory problems, I believe your daughter may start playing again. The headaches were gone  except for the eye twitching. But this twitching does not seem to affect her daily activities.

Is she still on medications?

Discuss this with your daughter's physician. He is the best person to guide you with this. A diagnosis of postconcussion syndrome is given when headaches ,memory problems, learning disabilities and neurologic deficits are still present 6 months after the trauma. In your daughter's case, it has only been a month and she is doing pretty well.
