Fiorocet

As I've shared in here I've been having near constant headaches for 3 weeks.  thinking they're tension related they put me on Soma and Aleve...I''ve been popping up to 4 aleve a day (as directed for soma) and no real releive..went to the doctor yesterday and she put me on fiorocet and if no change by Friday wants to do an MRI (neglected to remind her I have a paceaker..

Anyody know much about Fiorocet?  I'm taking only as directed but this mornng along with muscle relaxer (still prescried)  I was too loopy...fell down stairs, walked into walls, etc my wife wounldn't let me drive her to work..I guess the idea of bouncng off curbs and trees wasn't too thrillng to her. (Firorcet can cause dizziness)..

Thank you for that  info... so far today not doing too bad.  And I certainly don't want to be taking these things forever.  I'd like to get rid of some stressors in my life but right now that's very difficult...perhaps taking more walks would help as well..

well its good that you're having this checked out...but i don't know that i would worry too much. generally drugs like midrin aren't very effective outside standard migraines and tension headaches...so the fact that its even working is good....but still you don't want to rely on it. chloral hydrate pre-dates barbiturates....believe it or not, its actually more dangerous. barbiturates were considered an improvement...but in a forumlation like midrin, its not so bad since the other drugs in the combo prevent it from being taken in too high of doses.

in any event...what i'm getting at is that like fioricet, using this every day can also result in rebound headaches. just be aware of that. after a period of long use, these rebound headaches can really leave you worse off that you were to begin with. the good thing is that rebound headaches occure less with midrin than with other migraine products that contain caffeine, so you probably won't ever have to worry about it...just be aware of it. even the triptans can cause rebound migraines. its very annoying that they can't seem to find away around the rebound effect.

I've done fine taking the midrin, slight "floating feeling" once...taking as directed and it helps..take 2 as headache is coming on then 1 in four hours.  It is coming back and I'm due for the 4 hours 1 in about 15 mins.

doesn' help that I didn't sleep a lot last night.  I'm on call this week and was up and down all night working.

midrin contains a drug called dicholoralphenazone....this is actually a combo drug which is 2 parts choral hydrate....the marilyn monroe drug. in general the doses taken from midrin often aren't high enough to be a real problem, but they can eventually be if you take it too often. as an interesting side note...choral hydrate was also the drug of choice used by mickey finn...the bartender who used to like to drug or kill his customers. 'slipping a mickey...'

anyway, midrin does tend to be much safer than fioricet, as long as you respond well to it. some people literally feel like they're floating with it though...like they're weightless. i've actually had it happen before...its really a wierd feeling.

yes, that might be it....it might be all stress related.  There's enough around here you can cut it with a knife, coupled with I don't know how long I'm going to have a job, my 21 yr old daughter started culinary school today "Don't worry I can handle the $$) and then asks for money for gas and parking. and it would be nice if it wasn't 45 miles away.

Brain scan is next.  It's complicated by the fact I have a pacemaker which MRI's don't like, though some facilities have machines which can handle them.

I haven't had any negative effects from the midrin thus far (too about 2 hours ago) and right now no headach...though it's dull...my wife used to get terrible migrains where I'd have to taker her to the hospital for a shot.  Fortunetly the end of the visits from her monthly friend seem to have calmed them down though she still gets them from time to time...I haven't had on since I was a little kid that I can recall.

Why haven't they scheduled a brain scan. It's better to be safe than sorry. Cover all the bases. A headache shouldn't last that long.  I had the same thing years ago. The scan showed that I had fatty tissue pressing on a part of my brain. With medication it went away. My wife still calls me a,"Fathead."

Just curious ... I couldn't take Midrin as it made my stomach hurt too bad.  Does it bother your stomach or was that just me?

Sorry about your headache.  I get migraines frequently so I can really sympathize.  One time I had one last four days and I ended up going to the hospital and got a shot.  I have shots to take at home but nothing was helping that time.  I don't know what they did at the hospital but it finally kicked it.  That's the only time I ever went to the hospital for one but headaches have been a pretty much lifelong problem for me so really I am truly sorry for your pain.

Hope you find some relief soon.

Jim~  Fioricet was my DOC so I know quite a bit about it.  In your case, you're taking two sedating durgs ( Fioricet and Soma ). Both of the drugs share the same receptors in the brain so you'll feel it!  They are both habit forming but you probably know that.

Don't take those two drugs together anymore; just one or the other.   In the meantime, did the headache go away?

Fioricet contains Butalbital, Acetaminophen &Caffeine. I know you have taken the last two, so maybe you are having a reaction to the Butalbital. The side effects ARE dizziness and lightheadedness.

You should check with your doctor just to be sure Jim.
